WOX Travel Contest | Week 2 | Ibiza
I have decided to enter the travel contest with a report from my hometown, the island of Ibiza.
Ibiza has been famous all over the world since the 1960s, when the hippy movement born in California used it as a place of residence and stopover on its way to India. After that pilgrimage of young Americans in search of authenticity and a desire for freedom, came mass tourism and that is when the island became a reference point for nightlife, i.e. discotheques.
But that part of the island for which we are best known is not the only one, nor the most important. The capital of the island, the town of Eivissa, is a medieval walled citadel named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The posidonia seaweed meadows that surround the island are the most important in the Mediterranean, keeping the sea water completely crystal clear. We have an ancestral and unique culture, and we are a first class gastronomic reference.
That's not all, the Pitiusas Islands (Ibiza and Formentera) are an authentic landscape paradise, a place where being in contact with nature is one of the most precious assets we have.

He decidido presentarme al concurso de viajes con un reportaje del lugar de donde soy, la isla de Ibiza.
Ibiza tiene fama mundial desde que en los años 60 del siglo pasado, el movimiento hippy nacido en California lo utilizó como lugar de residencia y escala en su recorrido hacía la India. Detrás de ese peregrinaje de jóvenes americanos en busca de autenticidad y con ansias de libertad, vino el turismo de masas y ahí es cuando la isla se convirtió en una referencia del ocio nocturno, o sea, las discotecas.
Pero esa parte por la que somos más conocidos no es la única ni la más importante. La capital de la isla, la ciudad de Eivissa, es una ciudadela medieval amurallada nombrada patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco. Las praderas de alga posidonia que rodean la isla son las más importantes del mediterráneo, manteniendo el agua del mar completamente cristalina. Tenemos una cultura ancestral y única, y una somos una referencia gastronómica de primer nivel.
Eso no es todo, las Islas Pitiusas (Ibiza y Formentera) son un auténtico paraíso paisajístico, un lugar donde estar en contacto con la naturaleza es uno de los bienes más preciados que tenemos.

The fishermen's huts dot the island's coastline and have been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Fishermen keep their small boats in them.

Oh, Ibiza! @romanie often delights us with photos from Ibiza. And you revealed even more the beauty of this piece of paradise on earth. I really like historical buildings, fortifications, any archaeological finds. Your citadel is amazing. As I recall, the island saw many medieval battles.
