Growing My Own Food

in #ulog5 years ago

Earlier this spring I had decided that instead of planting flowers outside I'd try to grow some vegetables instead. I already had a couple of semi-live blueberry bushes and a small strawberry patch and felt that they needed some company.

The biggest issue I face is that the soil in my yard is clay, and the back yard does not get much sunlight due to an abundance of trees, so I have very limited ground space to plant. What I do have, however, is fence space, a couple corners, and a plot where plants could grow if not for the soil. So I've engaged in 'vertical' gardening.

I had previously posted about repurposing cat-litter buckets for growing (https://steemit.com/gardening/@wwwiebe/when-life-gives-you-cat-litter) and they appear to be working rather well! I'm happy with those and am hopeful that they will bear vegetables (sugar snap peas and cucumbers) before the season is out (side note and word to the wise: if you do decide to try something like this, be sure to drill holes in the buckets for drainage).

So, my current state is that in the backyard I have strategically placed a blackberry bush and two grape vines. The grape vines get the morning sun and the bush gets the afternoon sun. The vines are doing well and currently climbing a lattice that I've placed.

The far back of the yard I've composted some leaves in a ground-based greenhouse and planted pumpkins and watermelon seeds. The vines are growing! I think it will be a blast if I can host a Halloween party with a 'pick your own pumpkin' party.

In the front yard I am hanging vegetables: three planters that hang off the fence that would normally house flowers are currently growing lettuce, kale, and spinach, and are almost overflowing.

I've had so many cuke and pea vines that I've put them in hanging planters and am hanging them off the tree. And they're growing!

And of course, various herbs and mints in pots. They'll grow anywhere.

Now the best part of growing your own food is harvesting it. Behold, the first salad:

It was even better once I added this into it!

Mmmmmm. (disclaimer: I did not personally grow the beef)

I'm currently looking for ways to increase this make-shift garden. Lettuce's and greens are easy. I'm thinking I might try some radishes, too. I'd plant carrots, but I don't think they'd grow well in a pot.

Your garden looks great. Lettuce so fresh and healthy. I grow tomatoes, Hungarian Wax peppers amd sweet peppers. They don’t require much maintenance.

I've got some green peppers growing. I'll make a note of the others! Thanks!

That’s awesome! I love the repurposed pots and the vines. I think you should check out what veggies will grow in clay though, I think there’s quite a few!

You're probably right! I do plant a tomato bush in the ground which is growing well so far. It's not a nice looking plant though, and I've been trying to keep up aesthetics since this is my front yard, but they are tasty, and that may trump my vanity.

I see that you have posted in the correct #homesteading tag now.
There are many members that discuss issues around vegetable gardening.

This looks like a great beginning here my friend!
Blessings!

Thank you very much! And it is just that; a beginning. I have more plans yet! I will definitely keep an eye on #homesteading. Sustainable gardening I think its a great idea.

Looking good it’s amazing how much food you can get out of little corners of your yard.

Thanks! And yes, it's the corners that I have, so that's just exactly what I'm going to use.

That's a great idea; imagine having the whole garden full of fruit and veg, you could go around it picking healthy food to eat that would be so satisfying...

I do that with my strawberries and blueberries when they're ready! It's a good feeling.

Awesomely creative way to garden, @wwwiebe! I've seen hanging tomato plants before, but never cat litter cucumbers! 😂 Seriously an excellent way to repurpose old containers. LOLed at the not home grown beef comment, and love your makeshift garden! 😊

Haha! Thank you very much :) They're such good buckets that I hate to throw them out. Maybe I need to find a way to hang one of those!

You're very welcome, and that's an excellent idea! 😊

Your lettuce and spinach look so healthy and good!
We eat salad at least five times a week and I am thrilled that my own greens areas of the gardens are being super productive to keep up with our insatiable appetites!

And the greens have been really easy to grow, too! I'm thinking of expanding next year to see if I can replace all my store bought greens with home grown.

Fantastic, @wwwiebe! There is nothing better than your eating own harvest. The Husband used to ranch beef, but I'll take his word for that - it was before me! lol

On the carrots in containers: I did try it and it wasn't very successful. You could look at raised beds - that would give you more depth than containers. We also have clay soil and struggle with carrots so I have great sympathy!

I am definitely thinking of a raised bed. The biggest issue is getting my lazy butt to get one and put it together!
