MOVIE REVIEW: "Escape Room" (2019)

The Wave

Synopsis: When six strangers realize they are trapped in a dangerous game involving mysterious moving rooms revealing deadly traps, they need to come together and use their intelligence to find a way out as quickly as possible.

Nothing is created, everything is copied. This phrase can be applied to any segment because today it is virtually impossible to create something 100% original. Especially, in the entertainment world where movies are the main attraction, trying to innovate by introducing the audience to something new is hard... But everything gets even worse when besides reusing so many familiar ideas, the movie can't add anything that can be classified as something so different.

Variety

Taking a brief recap of the most recent years of cinema, it is not necessary to make much effort to realize the large number of references to several other films of the same genre that are about in this one. Literally, it is a flood of ideas that have already been used and reused from a variety of perspectives. Of course, this does not make it unfeasible that they can be used again as long as there is something unique about what is being told.

There is no doubt that this lack of originality in the midst of a veritable parade of clichés full of uninspiring is the worst among so many errors that navigate deeper and deeper into the script of this movie, that with each new scene makes it clear how precarious it is. approach and how problematic is treatment of the story itself. No matter how few moments there are when the plot tries to take off taking advantage of one or another happier moment (where it gets a minimal mood of suspense, anxiety or tension can be established)... It's only a matter of seconds until the mistakes swallow the movie again.

Vanyaland

The script bets on the old formula of mysteriously confining strangers with totally opposite profiles (where each of them lives a difficult time in their private life) in an inhospitable place and by making them face dangerous situations in exchange for a high cash prize, watching how they will behave until the problem solution is found. However, when they discover the escape rooms where they are equipped with various types of dangerous traps... They realize that the danger is real and immediate.

Since this psychological conflict becomes an additional and essential element of the game, capable of creating destabilization at an ever-higher level, the initially fragile relationship between the characters (which, by the way, is awful... they caricate to extreme, poorly developed and played by a remarkably laughable cast and very poor acting) gets closer when they realize the need to have to fight together. Between errors and successes they advance to the next rooms and in the middle of the search for the exit, some of them die under circumstances that when not stupid they sin for the bad execution.

ComingSoon

I confess that I was very impressed (in the negative sense) with the predictability of the script (which even had the potential to be much more than it really is). Generally speaking, as much as there is some visual appeal from the production team regarding the way the story is constructed and presented to the public (for example: the scenarios are very good, they have a interesting photography and most are well used by being widely explored), it does not take long for the very few hits of the script to begin to repeat and the predictability of events to become increasingly noticeable.

Moreover, the writers have not skimmed on scenes where they find it valid to want to explain (often in the smallest detail) every step of the characters in their artificial interaction dynamics (everything sounds false to them... it's a terrible job of construction) as if the plot were extremely complex to the point that there is a need for extra help to understand it. Not to mention the fact that the script delivers a good deal of its climax as early as its first scenes (even before the movie's title appears on screen!).

A half-pop vibe dominates the uneven work done by director Adam Robitel. He chooses to mix a degree of violence and anxiety with a very discreet presence of blood. At times this works because some takes are assertive and bring a fresh-smelling air to the theme (and this includes some angle framing), but the lack of boldness to embrace the idea and go deep into what really needed to happen makes the narrative too light (especially when compared to other movies in the same genre).

Entertainment Focus

In a nutshell, I could say that within the genre where Escape Room desperately tries to get a seat, it fails miserably in every way possible and ends up being just another title that will soon be soon forgotten (if the studio doesn't want to) invest in future sequences... as is clear at the end of the third act).
