HIS DARK MATERIALS (TV SERIES): First impressions.

Today TV Series

Based on Philip Pullman's books, the HBO channel debuts its latest literary adaptation ... But this time, who gets the spotlight is a mixture that involves a lot of magic (having as some protagonists witches, warrior bears and deamons) with the reality of a world that we - apparently - already know it.

The series follows the young Lyra who ends up discovering a conspiracy involving great authorities from the magical world where she lives. In this quest for truth she will discover other secrets that until then no one had a clue. In the middle of this path she will count on the help of unusual creatures and brave human beings... Together they will fight for justice.

The series debut was very solid and wasted no time in establishing itself as a story worth watching (despite a quick takeoff). Unlike its cinematic adaptation (which took place 12 years ago), the material made straight for TV is much better thought and worked. I believe it is a work that is at least striving to surrender as an adaptation that attempts to materialize (in many ways) a world already known in books.

The script focuses all its energies on creating a fantasy world, without moving too far from the ordinary world, and this connection between "parallel worlds" was a wise decision because it makes all events sound more believable. Planting a dilemma at its starting point that is linked to the kidnapping of a child in the Gyptian community in the middle of the night, the script seems to want to follow a more traditional narrative line... However, it doesn't seem to want to give up the freedom to innovate in their approaches.

Besides being able to go deeper into the world in which it intends to build, the plot seems to bring more complex problems to develop, involving characteristic elements that reinforce this drama (and this is very clear in this first episode). There is a very pertinent boldness of the producers in pursuit of greater objectivity, trying to consolidate the script into a dramatically well-structured and visually beautiful story to watch.

Showing great enthusiasm as they explore this world full of possibilities, the series features a range of captivating characters with very interesting essences that seem to match very well. The heavyweight cast (with names like James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin Manuel Miranda) reinforces this connection with them because they are all well personified by the actors (who are very comfortable in their performances).

That Shelf

The protagonist Lyra (role played by Dafne Keen), despite being a child, is already emerging as a brave and determined figure who deserves the public attention for being so impetuous. She is the key piece that hides much of the plot's mysteries, making her the wild card of future episodes.

Amid a very well-focused narrative, the audience will surely notice how much it is a well done production (which would be nothing new, after all ... we are talking about an HBO series), which brings among their other highlights: An excellent soundtrack (I would say this is a grander technical aspect so far... because sound plays a key role) and a very creative and attractive costume work.

His Dark Materials has a very rich work of photography, the manicured special effects and the art editing also deserves to be highlighted because they can change the ambiance of the series in a beautiful, simple and direct way... In a few minutes of viewing, the viewer can already feel part of that new world with ownership.

International Business Times

Tom Hooper was responsible for the direction (proving to be a great choice for this job) and added a great and relevant title to his resume, because the skill with which he deals with the history of the series - and its characters - has a remarkable quality and with a very accurate timming when it comes to narrative building.

Conclusion: I have no doubt that I will continue to watch this series because its scalability is very concrete and still seems to hold many amazing adventures with fascinating surprises.
