Toys R' Us Is Closing All Its Stores - My Son Will Not Understand

in #news7 years ago (edited)

I noticed this article this morning about Toys R' Us' continuing bankruptcy woes, and it appears the most recent development may spell the end of an era. They are considering liquidating all US operations and closing all 800+ of its stores, possibly as early as the next couple of weeks according to reports.

I have no idea how we're going to explain this to our little boy who loves the store that was opened in our town some time in the the early 1990's. When I was a kid, I remember seeing commercial after commercial on Nickelodeon for their mascot, Geoffrey Giraffe, and wishing beyond wishes that they'd finally open one here in town. It was like seeing commercials for amusement parks that were in towns 3 and 4 hours away. But when I was about 10 or 11 years old, they finally did it. Granted, they were (and still are) the most expensive toy store in town compared to one in our local mall, as well as places like Target or Walmart, but they had everything a kid could possibly want.

My 4 year old little boy, though... this is going to be hard for him. Every now and then, especially in the car, he'll blurt out "Toys R Us! Toys R Us!" Despite his autism, he knows where his favorite places are. Some of his favorite toys came from that store. I can kind of see it now: At some point after they close, we'll be in the car and he'll say "Toys R Us". His mom and I will look at each other, knowing. We'll try to take him there to show him that the sign is gone, the doors are locked, and that all the stuff inside is gone. It's going to break his heart, and he won't understand that mommy & daddy don't have the power to make it come back. One of the many worries is his reaction to us "not letting" him go inside. Since he pretty much sees us as the ones in control of his world, I'm fairly certain he'll believe we're being mean to him, teasing him by taking him there to show him it's closed.

It's going to be one of those hard lessons in life that nothing is permanent. Everything is temporary.

Sad news!

I have very clear childhood memories of spending hours at the local Toys 'R' Us store, playing with the hundreds of different basketballs and spending even more time in the action figure section. Those were the good times!

It really was a cool store for kids, the atmosphere beats anything around but, with high prices and the rise of online shopping it's a sad reality that it wouldn't be able to sustain itself. I'm sorry you boy won't have his favorite store anymore. Hopefully a similar stoee comes along to fill the market void and gives your son a new favorite store.

Brother you're looking at this from the wrong angle. I am sure there has been talk or commercials that your son has heard in passing at the store or doctors by other people. I think he knows the store is closing and just reminding you guys to take him as much as possible before the store is gone.
I've learned with our little one they are normally much faster to catch on to what we are as adults as their minds are in super speed. As adult males we have learned to block out strangers talking and he hears it all.

I would normally agree, but he really has no idea they're closing. His requests for it are usually because we're in the vicinity of the store, or we just left Walmart where he couldn't find the toy he was looking for, because he knows he can find what he's thinking of at TRU. We've seen him completely turn down all toys at other stores because of this.

I was just thinking someone at school was probably talking about it. You have lots of people there that would/could discuss it. Parents, teachers and kids. I've found hours after we talk about food and ask our son what he wants to eat he will tell us what he wants from the restaurant we were discussing earlier that day or sometimes two days ago.

My main point was they don't appear to be but are generally smarter than almost all other kids their ages. They just lack the verbal communication. I argue with my wife all the time when she tells me she just wishes he would talk. I constantly point out the fact of how much the two of us constantly wish people would just shut up. Two different views on the same subject. I am a dreamer, I guess.

I am very sorry for this situation dear friend @winstonwolfe, I understand very well what that means for a child. I live in Argentina one of the worst countries in inflationary indexes, here it is very common to go to a store and find it closed.
Coincidentally yesterday we went with my wife to the mall and we found out that the children's playroom and the Bowling closed its doors, one of the few places where my granddaughter comes to have fun.

This is the end of an era indeed.

As a kid my favorite places to go was either toys-r-us or chuck e cheese, the atmosphere alone made it so enjoyable. However unlike the latter, I would still go for the video games that they had in stock that you couldn't find anywhere else because they were sold out.

I know that this seems like a risky venture with amazon growing more by the day, but I hope someone keeps a physical presence around because only half of the joy comes from a toy, it's also the place you get it from.

Exactly. And he decides what toy he wants after having a "play test" session with everything that strikes his interest. What fun is buying a toy if you can't try it out first? I'd hate to risk buying everything online knowing that the moment he gets it he might not like it.

I blame Disney for failling to convince tens of millions of 40 year olds to buy Star Wars toys after the disaster that was The Last Jedi.

Also, kids these days play mostly with smartphones and PCs.
