The eggplant plant (Solanum melongena) is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family, the same family as tomatoes and potatoes. Originally from South Asia, particularly India and China, eggplant was introduced to Europe around the Middle Ages, becoming a fundamental element of Mediterranean and international cuisine.

The eggplant plant is annual in temperate climates and perennial in tropical ones, characterized by an upright habit. The stem is sturdy, often covered with fine hair and sometimes spiny, as are some of its leaves. The leaves are large, lobed, dark green, and also slightly hairy. They are particularly sensitive to cold and require mild temperatures to develop properly.

The plant blooms in spring or summer, producing solitary or small clusters of flowers that are purple or white, with five petals and a yellow center made up of stamens. After pollination, the flowers turn into the edible fruit: the eggplant. The elongated fruits have smooth, shiny skin. The classic eggplant is dark purple, but there are white, striped, or various shades of purple varieties. The flesh is white and spongy, with small seeds arranged inside.

Eggplant is a versatile ingredient in the kitchen, appreciated for its delicate flavor and ability to absorb the seasonings and flavors of other ingredients. It is used in traditional dishes like eggplant parmigiana, Sicilian caponata, or simply grilled, fried, or baked. In addition to its culinary value, eggplant is low in calories and rich in fiber, vitamins (especially vitamin C and B vitamins), and minerals like potassium and magnesium.

The eggplant plant requires sunny and warm locations to grow optimally, as it is sensitive to low temperatures. The soil should be well-drained, rich in organic matter, and kept consistently moist, but without waterlogging. It's important to ensure regular watering, especially during the flowering and fruit development stages.

Isn't the eggplant related to the cucumber? I grew them years ago in a crate. It grew wonder well and I had more eggplant than we could eat not that that is difficult since we don't really like it that is except for the colour.

A cucumber tastes like water and eggplant tastes like? Well, it does taste a bit dry and it's tasteless. I believe I used it in a risotto but I can't say I find it special. I also marinated slices with garlic and some herbs and grilled it. That also wasn't a big success but I guess it has all to do with taste or what you are used to eating.

If I have the choice I rather eat oatmeal.

How many do you harvest and what if there are too many? Will you have three meals per day with eggplant only or does it end up as food for the pigs? Now I think of it I can't remember I've seen the eggplant in the shop since a few years.

I liked your photos although the picture of the tiny man is a bit disturbing, it does make that eggplant huge though.

A great evening to you.

Hi! Thanks for your message 😊

You're right, eggplants and cucumbers aren't exactly closely related, though they are both very versatile vegetables in the kitchen.

As for the harvest, yes, sometimes I end up with a lot of eggplants! If I can't sell them, I share them with friends or turn them into preserves. My favorite way to eat them is grilled! They’re fantastic that way because they lose all their “bitterness.”

As for the store, it’s strange that you haven’t seen them in a while. Maybe it’s just a matter of season or availability, but I’m sure they’ll be back on the shelves soon.

Oh, and I’m glad you liked the photos! The “tiny man” effect was just to add a fun touch and make the image unique with my little avatar 😊

I wish you a great evening too! See you soon.

Saludos.

Thanks for commenting. You wrote something good. That eggplant is huge or is it because of the picture of the tiny figure at the left? A great evening to you and thanks for upvoting the author.
