Why I Shouldn't Go On Vacation... Farming never gets easy!

I hadn't been on vacation in over 7 years! Farmers don't get vacations! Well, that ended last weekend when I got to go to the beach with my female in-laws for a weekend getaway! It started out fantastic!

I really needed the break from the farm and kids and felt so at peace on the beach! We spent the whole first day soaking up the sunshine, breathing in the salty breeze, and floating in the ocean water! Pure bliss...until much later that night I was oblivious...

There was some worrying and concern in my heart because one of my goats back home was sick but there was nothing I could do but trust Ryan to get him better! Maybe that was what distracted me that morning, or maybe it was just the pure bliss of the sand between my toes... but when I applied my sunscreen to my legs I was not as careful as I usually am...

The burn was so bad my ankles swelled and my skin felt like it would burst! Five days later the blisters and scabbing arrived. It wasn't good but I enjoyed my time on the beach, just under a towel for my legs! On the way home I wore my super soft leggings so I wouldn't brush against anything.

At this point I thought the bad part was over mostly, but then I saw my garden! It rained all week after getting home and I couldn't do anything to help! My tomatoes had fallen over and were struggling to survive and the weeds had taken over everything and grown a foot!

So much for being refreshed and ready to get back to normal, normal had turned into a nightmare! It took me 6 hours yesterday, with no break, just to get my tomatoes strung back up and all the lower leaves pruned off. My back hasn't been bad at all lately until last night after that hard work. Today I am sore and trying to not let it go all the way out as it has in the past.

So next time I'm offered a vacation, I think I'll pass... or not because that ocean felt really good!!

Here is a vlog of some of my tomato cleanup and some goat stuff!

It's always so hard stepping away when there is so much to do, but you also have to practice self care, you needed it, the tomatoes will be fine, your health and mental well being come first!! Great post!!!

Thank you Tara! It's hard to apply self care!

Oh I can just feel the wind and the sun in my face and the sand under my feet....sigh-the ocean is a wonderful place to be I loved it all my life!-the endless blue gives one such a feeling of eternity.....it just goes and goes as far as you can see-I am so happy for you that you had a great time at the beach-well we just skip the sunburn...my last vacation was 20 yrs ago-Italy-beach 7 days with my mom and my 2 boys -one was 10 the other 7-we had a blast! Here is what you do-record the sound of the waves, gest some sand in a bag for your hand to play in and a bucket full of water to stick your feet in-lean back close your eyes and be back at the beach lol

great idea!!! thank you!

Amen! Its a lot of work to grow are food and take care of are flock. We all need are time off tho. My wife and I will some times just take a day trip to the lake. Even tho we are just gone for a few hrs. It's a true blessing..Thanks for this. Upvote and resteem!! God Bless.

Ah, vacation. That sounds very nice indeed! Kudos to you for putting the afterburners on and getting all that stuff caught up!

Afterburners indeed! lol!

So how did the goat end up? Fine? Did I miss that part? Haha

Yeah, we were only gone for the day the other weekend with our friend watching g over the Farmstead... I was totally worried the whole time!!

He ended up being okay thank god! he was so sick !

Man! Glad to hear!

I can only imagine how hard it is farming. Best of luck to you.

What a lot of work! I can feel your sore muscles just watching.

Question:
What do you do about providing water for the goats?

They have a huge livestock trough in paddock and 5 gallon buckets in stalls at night.
