A Season to be Grateful!
Tomorrow, we observe Thanksgiving, here in the US.
Although, much of the original intent behind observing Thanksgiving has perhaps been lost to the interests of commercialism, I always encourage people to lay aside things like "Black Friday shopping" and instead focus on the things in their lives that deserve gratitude.
What many discover — some to their surprise — is that the "things" they are most grateful for are actually not things, but people, experiences, feelings, family.
Who are the people who really make a difference in your life? And when was the last time you paused to actually let them know that they matter to you?
We have an unfortunate tendency to dismiss actual displays of gratitude as "not important," telling our selves stories like someone knows they are important... and whereas that might be true, it's always nice to hear it, directly.
Both my husband and I caught a nasty case of the flu a couple of weeks back, and we are still in the recovery stages, so we are having a very low-key Thanksgiving this year.
Our 30-something son arrived from Seattle a few hours ago, and this weekend it will be just the three of us, focusing on quiet family time, and being grateful for the good things we do have in our lives.
It would be easy to give in to focusing on "what's missing," — goodness knows there's plenty in that department! — but we're focusing on what we have, and being grateful for those things.
What are you grateful for?
Whereas I recognize that "Thanksgiving" — as a holiday — is a very American thing, the idea of practicing gratitude is a pretty global one.
So, regardless of whether you are formally celebrating the holiday or not, I invite you to take at least a little of this coming weekend to reflect on what you have and what you are grateful for.
Thanks for stopping by, and Bright Blessings to all!
