Ride for Rhino Conservation.....

Steemers!

Do I have some juicy reporting for those of you who are passionate about animals...most especially African Wildlife. Today while I was scoffing a chocolate cupcake my friend looked out the window and saw a life size rhino. She said rhino? Yes she did. Having grown up in Africa - anything relating to African Wildlife and I am sniffing around...

So we went outside and I met Matt Meyer...

He traveled the West Coast (Canada to San Diego, 2000 miles) towing a life size African Black Rhino to bring awareness about the poaching dilemma the Rhino faces. If things continue the way they are the Rhino will become extinct in the wild. Even in captivity it is difficult to breed Rhino so my experience of a walking Safari in the African Bush 500 meters from wild Rhino may never be heard of again...

Rhino's are fabulous wild animals....their demise is indeed a tragedy of enormous proportions.

What you didn't know about Rhino's:-

  1. A group of Rhino is called a crash!

  2. Gestation lasts 15-16 months.

  3. Rhino can run...and run fast...imagine 1000-2 000 pounds coming at you with speed.....30-40 miles an hour.

  4. There are 2 species of Rhino in Africa. The Black and White Rhino. It has nothing to do with their color. The White Rhino is actually named Weit in Africaans which means wide - they have a wide square upper lip.

  5. They are not solitary - they often live in groups comprising of extended family.

  6. Rhinocerous is derived from Greek (rhino - nose and ceros - horn).

  7. Closest living relatives are tapirs, horses and zebras.

  8. They used to roam N. America and Europe.

  9. Black rhino's have a prehensile upper lip to browse shrubs and the White Rhino a square flat upper lip to graze on grasses. They have poor eyesight but superb hearing!

  10. Rhino's could be extinct in 30 years or less.

Support the critically endangered Rhino!
