In der vergangenen Woche hatte ich angekündigt, daß mein Freund Issam, genannt Sam, am Wochenende zu seinem wahnwitzigen Vorhaben aufbricht, den ganzen afrikanischen Kontinent auf dem Fahrrad zu umrunden. Für die ungefähr 33.000 Kilometer hat er etwa zwei Jahre eingeplant.

Sein geplanter Start am Sonntag mit dem Flieger von Berlin Richtung Marrakesch verlief… Es gab Pannen. Den Tränen nahe vermeldete er am Montag, daß er bei der Sicherheitskontrolle am Flughafen verhaftet wurde: weil er ein Parkticket aus Januar 2023 nicht gezahlt hat. Es ging tatsächlich um 30,-€, die ihm während der Vorbereitungen seines Panamericana-Abenteuers einfach untergegangen sind. Da die Polizei selbst keine Barzahlungen mehr annehmen darf, war ihm ein Ausgleich der Forderung an Ort und Stelle nicht möglich. Er verbrachte die Nacht also im Gewahrsam, konnte die Einzahlung dann Montag vormittag bei der Justizkasse vornehmen.

Und stand dann da – ohne Flieger, natürlich war auch das Geld für das Ticket verloren. Einen Ersatz konnte er nicht zeitnah buchen. Einziger Ausweg, der sich halbwegs realistisch darstellen ließ: mit dem Flixbus nach Köln/Bonn und von dort mit einer Billigairline ans Ziel nach Marrakesch, wo natürlich seine Hotelbuchung wegen Nichterscheinens ebenfalls annulliert wurde.

Der Flixbus war wohl unangenehm voll, die Fahrt extrem lang und mit Wartezeiten verbunden, so daß er 11 unkomfortable Stunden im Bus verbrachte. Sein Fahrrad wurde glücklicherweise anstandslos auch in der Flugverpackung mitgenommen…

Die Laune war denkbar schlecht – er ist Pannen in jeder erdenklichen Form gewohnt und weiß damit umzugehen. Noch vor Beginn der eigentlichen Tour schien es ihm allerdings beinahe wie ein schlechtes Vorzeichen.

Davon ließ er sich nicht abhalten, mit einer kleinen Verzögerung in seine Challenge zu starten: Ankunft in Marokko erschöpft und niedergeschlagen, aber voller Tatendrang. Auf dem Transport wurden Kabel seiner Lichtanlage in Mitleidenschaft gezogen, die bei einem örtlichen Fahrradhändler repariert werden mußten. Um auch sonst wieder mental in gute Form zu kommen, entschied er sich für einige Tage Aufenthalt. Untergekommen bei privaten Gastgebern aus dem gemeinsamen Netzwerk verbrachte er eine gute Zeit und wurde schnell fit für den eigentlichen Start.

Am Donnerstag ging es dann endlich los…:

Die erste Etappe brachte außer Wadenkrämpfen und Kopfschmerzen das glückliche Gefühl, wieder frei und unterwegs zu sein! Die letzten der 103 Kilometer führten strikt bergan, das Atlasgebirge hinauf. Abgekämpft, aber hoch zufrieden kam er bei seinem dortigen Gastgeber an.

Am Freitag ging es dann überwiegend bergab auf der Rückseite des Gebirgszuges und sein Ziel Agadir erreichte er nach 150 Kilometern. Dort wurde ein Tag mit Sightseeing und Stranderkundung eingelegt.

So. Mehr kann ich Euch für den Moment noch nicht berichten – Sam sollte wieder unterwegs sein, manchmal ist einfach kein Kontakt möglich. Seinen Steem Account - @panafricana-sam - haben wir mittlerweile eingerichtet: folgt ihm bitte, wenn Ihr frische Informationen aus erster Hand wollt!

Abgesehen von den technischen Schwierigkeiten, die DTube uns bislang bereitet – wir werden einen Weg finden, diese zumindest zu umgehen, wenn nicht zu lösen -, stellt auch der Upload seiner Videos an sich ein gewisses Problem dar: über Mobilfunk ist es für die Aufnahmen seiner Helmcam einfach nicht realisierbar. Weder Datenvolumen noch Netzstabilität sind ausreichend für die großen Dateien, selbst mit Komprimierung… Es wird also vermutlich zunächst nur Snippets geben, kurze Eindrücke und Ausschnitte.

Wann er damit beginnt, kann ich nicht versprechen; ich werde darauf aufmerksam machen.

Ich hoffe, daß es trotz zähem Start und anfänglicher Unsicherheiten ein lohnenswerter Blog wird und drücke schon 'mal alle Daumen für eine zahlreiche Gefolgschaft!

Last week I announced that my friend Issam, known as Sam, would be setting off at the weekend on his crazy plan to cycle around the entire African continent. He has planned about two years for the approximately 33,000 kilometres.

His planned start on Sunday with the plane from Berlin to Marrakech was... There were breakdowns. On Monday, on the verge of tears, he announced that he had been arrested at the airport security check: because he hadn't paid for a parking ticket from January 2023. It was actually about €30, which he had simply lost during the preparations for his Panamericana adventure. As the police are no longer allowed to accept cash payments themselves, it was not possible for him to settle the claim on the spot. So he spent the night in custody and was then able to make the payment to the court cashier on Monday morning.

And then there he was - without a plane, and of course the money for the ticket was also lost. He was unable to book a replacement in time. The only way out that was reasonably realistic was to take the Flixbus to Cologne/Bonn and from there take a low-cost airline to his destination in Marrakech, where his hotel booking was of course also cancelled due to his non-appearance.

The Flixbus was probably unpleasantly full, the journey extremely long and with waiting times, so that he spent 11 uncomfortable hours on the bus. Fortunately, his bike was taken along in the flight packaging without any problems...

He was in a very bad mood - he is used to breakdowns in every conceivable form and knows how to deal with them. Even before the start of the actual tour, however, it almost seemed like a bad omen to him.

He didn't let this stop him from starting his challenge with a slight delay: arriving in Morocco exhausted and dejected, but full of vigour. The cables of his lighting system were damaged during transport and had to be repaired at a local bike dealer. In order to get back into good mental shape, he decided to stay for a few days. Staying with private hosts from our shared network, he had a good time and quickly got fit for the actual start.

On Thursday he finally set off...:

Apart from calf cramps and headaches, the first stage brought the happy feeling of being free and on the road again! The last of the 103 kilometres were strictly uphill, up the Atlas Mountains. He arrived at his local host's house exhausted but highly satisfied.

On Friday, the route was mainly downhill on the back of the mountain range and he reached his destination of Agadir after 150 kilometres. There he spent a day sightseeing and exploring the beach.

That's all I can tell you for now - Sam should be on the road again, sometimes there's just no contact possible. We have set up his Steem account - @panafricana-sam - in the meantime: please follow him if you want fresh first-hand information!

Apart from the technical difficulties that DTube has caused us so far - we will find a way to at least work around them, if not solve them - the upload of his videos itself also poses a certain problem: it is simply not feasible for the recordings of his helmet cam via mobile phone. Neither data volume nor network stability are sufficient for the large files, even with compression... So there will probably only be snippets, short impressions and excerpts at first.

I can't promise when he'll start vlogging; I'll draw attention to it.

I hope that it will be a worthwhile blog despite the slow start and initial uncertainties and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a large following!
