What is Regada? In Cavite, Philippines people in our city loves to party and this is one of the most awaited festivals in our city known as Regada. Streets are closed and water sprinklers are set up in the middle of the street. Music, beer, parades and a time to get crazy. If you are not in the mood on getting wet be sure to stay at home as when this day comes no one will be left dry on the streets. People come out of their houses with buckets of water as arsenal and there is no place to hide on the streets.

Sounds fun? Well that event is two days from now but during the week there are a lot contests in preparation of the festival. Today I would share with you artworks from the logo making contest and Disenyo sa Buho( Design from Bamboo poles).

Road to the Water Festival

The logo of Regada is in the form of a human with arms stretched welcoming the blessings of life. The form of motion is symbolic to progress and a bright future. The contest was open to elementary students from all over the city. Different designs which includes symbolic places, religion, culture and colors that are full of life. It is amazing to see how very talented the elementary students who joined the contest. The designs gave a different look and story to the original design in which I would discuss in detail later.

All lined up like they have already started the party, dancing with hands up in the air. These works of art adds to the anticipation of the people on the up coming water festival.

In celebration of St. John the Baptist in which the festival originated from. A painting of the St. that I say is well done by an elementary student. This design is beautifully painted with colors bursting with festivities.

This design has people with arms raised in celebration of the Regada with water spurting filled with color. Symbolizes how colorful the festival is each year. On the left it shows fishermen as this is a major livelihood for a lot of our citizens.

A design showing a little bit of everything connected to the city and the festival. Crabs and shrimps as we have a lot of those here which are fresh everyday.

Now for the other portion of the contest called

Disenyo sa Buho
interpretations of the event using a bamboo pole. This contest is for the High School students to showcase their talents.I believe these would be used on the parade on the day of the event. Different types of recycled materials are used in creating the pole. From old cd roms, plastic spoons, shells, nets and the shell fish which we are known for called "Tahong" also known as sea mussels. Our city has an abundant supply of sea mussels and if you would like a glimpe of our market and me in action preparing a dish. Feel free to check an old post of mine

All lined up they all come in pairs which definitely now I believe they would be showcased on the parade along with dancing on the streets. I just hope the colors on the poles would not wash off once the the sprinklers starts to open.

This logo is the official design of the Regada like I mentioned earlier the human symbolizes welcoming the blessings of life. The red color is a symbol for St. John the Baptist and you would notice raindrops on the upper right which comes from the sprinklers on the streets. The color green is the city's symbolism for its love and awareness of the environment. Our city has three bays which is shown by the three waves on the left part of the logo.

This is an interesting piece and if you notice there is a green pail on the right side. Added with transparent plastic as if the bucket if fetching water. That bucket of water you would experience the moment you come outside. Sometimes it's cold so better get ready for a chilly bath.

This one has used sea mussels and shells to create the logo. Those on top looks like colorful straws that I can't really tell as I did not notice until now.

The design made me smile not because of the net decorated with oyster shells, clams and mussels. We don't have dolphins around here but it definitely made my day. Next year I wouldn't be surprised if there is a whale included on a design. That would be a sight to look forward to.

More designs with nets and sea creatures. I did experience once riding a fisherman's boat and casting a net it was hard. The boat was small and was really shaky that made me dizzy after almost an hour. I think I would prefer fishing from the shore instead unless it's a bigger boat and more stable.

I like the color combination of the green and black spoons. A lot of recycled materials used here.

Just what you need once the sprinklers starts raining down. That would not help as people have their high powered water guns and almost everyone has water ammunition in different forms.

One of my favorite designs and is very clean in design. I love the sun flower in the middle and with that rays streaming below. The shells are distributed evenly and each are carefully decorated. The flat woven basket used here is called a Bilao. It was used back in the days to separate rice granules from its hull along with a back and forth motion. These days they are a popular take out storage when you order noodles which are available in different sizes.

Here they are the entries for the contest. No winner has been announced yet but do let me know which is your favorite. There are a lot of good entries and I believe the judges would have a difficult time deciding the winner.

This is just a part of the road that leads to the water festival. Every one here is very excited for the much anticipated event of the year. A time when people goes on a water rampage and it is legal to splash anyone with water on that day.
