How Do Biases Affect Everything You Do?
Biases affect everything you do, even if we are careful to try not to encounter them. For instance, when we drive on the right side of the road, we don't expect other drivers to do the same. When we go shopping for items we want, we expect others to buy the same from us, even if it is not in their best interest. In workplaces, we deal with colleagues and supervisors who have different points of view, or who just don't get it as clearly as we do. And, on the whole, we live in a world in which our boss has a clear advantage over us because he has knowledge that we don't have, whereas we have little or no technical knowledge, and are more or less helpless when confronted with superior intellectual skills.
Of course, these problems cannot be blamed on biases alone. People play roles too, and they are not exempt from mistakes. However, the combination of forces is such that certain biases can become very powerful in determining how we act. They make up our mental scripts. They determine what we believe to be true, and what we feel to be true.
How we react to the world around us determines much of how we act. Biases can influence our judgmental skills and decision-making. They can also affect our emotional responses and behavior. They may give us confidence one minute, and then leave us shaken with fear the next.
Biases affect us at every level of our lives. They set the tone for everything that happens next. For instance, consider a situation where you have just been passed a great test. Suddenly, you feel very confident about your ability to do well. However, a few minutes later, you begin to doubt your initial assessment. You might conclude that you just saw how shallow people's judgments can be - perhaps they are not as smart as you thought, or perhaps they are just afraid of failing.
Such reflections are common. We tend to look for patterns that will help us predict the future. This way, we will be able to live our lives more effectively. The problem is that biases are too deeply ingrained in our thinking to be removed by simple observation. We have to take an active approach to challenging them.
Biases are habits that are deeply rooted in our subconscious. In fact, these beliefs are so deeply seated in our subconscious that even what appears to be completely random may be a part of a pattern. Biases affect us at every level of our lives. We act based on what we believe, and what we think others will think of us. Biases are hard to fight against. However, there is one weapon we have which makes it easier to combat biases - conscious reflection.
conscious reflection can work for all negative biases and work for you as well. In order to make conscious reflection work, however, we have to first accept our own biases. If we try to work against our natural strengths, then we will only get weaker as a person. Biases come with us like they are. We just have to learn to control them. Once we have accepted our biases, then conscious reflection will be much easier.
The more accepting we are of our own biases, the easier our lives will be as a result. Biases affect us at all levels of our lives. Biases are hard to fight against but if we want to be strong and powerful, then accepting our natural strengths is the best way to go. Biases are an integral part of human life. As long as we recognize them for what they are, and take an active role in taking control, we will be able to control biases and improve our lives.
