My Best Self
I work in a call center. It's my job to solve other people's problems regarding their health insurance claims and benefits, including prescriptions, prior authorizations and claims. It takes a certain type of person to succeed in such a stringent and sometimes toxic environment... like today when all systems went down for the majority of the day.
When a person calls me, they want something from their high priced policy and don't take well to denials of any sort. I speak to all personalities and various economic situations. I attempt to present information and no panic is advised to creep into my voice as I deliver even the least welcome communication regarding those needs.
I'm good at my job. I bring almost two decades of customer service and over five years in middle management to the table. Prior experience as a supervisor helps me understand the objectives and secrets employed by upper management. This experience puts me at some advantage but also some measure of distrust in methodology being disseminated.
Today was a long day. In fact, the previous two weeks following a system update have been more stressful than usual as systems are not functioning quickly and today went down completely.
Yesterday I contemplated walking off the job. The pain of a migraine coupled with sciatica made staying nearly impossible and I struggled to go through the motions and keep a smile in my voice while dealing with a myriad of issues and personality types. Some people become combative when their claims have denied against their policy or a treatment ordered by a doctor is not a covered benefit. Even so, I give the best solutions I have within my power to the member.
Tomorrow the call volume is likely to soar due to today's outages. I did my exercises to strengthen my hip again. Sitting is a torture again since August when the sciatica pain returned post surgery (last November).
Friday beacons like a siren. I pray I am able to stay positive and rest now. I cannot afford to lose my game now, but next weeks planned getaway to visit my best friend in Canada gives me a measure of peace and I slink down on my sofa and attempt to release the day and to prepare mentally for what lies ahead.
Be nice to your customer service advocate. Most of us really care about our jobs and a little kindness goes a long way for their day.

The computers were down from after first call to the days end again @kaerpediem! My fiance's mother had her second stroke last night and my sisters mom also broke her hip. It was a challenging day for everyone. The vibes were welcomed. Hugs
