I keep thinking about the email I received, thinking and wondering but also ask myself if I gave the right answer.

"If you step into the plane... I might put a ring on your finger."
What does that mean?
It doesn't sound very attractive to me. Why should I step in a plane, waste time and money for a "might"?
"Might" means nothing. It is not an "I will". To me, it is the same as "perhaps" and perhaps stands for "no". It's a way of refusing used by people who are not straight enough to say NO right into your face. It is a cheap and easy way to stay friends, get what you want without investing yourself. "Might"is an empty promise.
This besides the fact I am not interested in rings/jewelry and not in being married either. I like my life, the freedom I have, no taking care of an adult with "mights" and who knows what more issues. No fights, no struggles, no giving ins, no sharing of my income, debts.
Does he really believe his "might" and "ring" is attractive to me, a good reason for me to give up my life to please him?

You will have disappointed him very much with your words. These are words you said that are not very romantic. But life's demands aren't exactly romantic either, haha. I think that also, Life in prison is different from outside, but I think that if you really love, everything can survive a love. But if you have strong doubts about the part "I love you", I would rather say, rather not. All your words actually confirm to me that you are not willing. But how is it with you? Do you love him? How about your kids? The best thing is to discuss this with your children. And what you all want is the best solution.
If so, then clear agreements can be made. But I would say, before you let a ring slip over you should live together with you, your children and the man in friendship. When this friendship becomes deeper and love arises, then sensitivity is always needed, because you are a family with different needs and wills.
Why should I live with someone I only see as a pen-pal? I am not interested in getting married or living together. We never discussed this.
Writing with a prisoner you mainly do so they have a bit of contact to the outside world. Not more.
Might be the outside world suddenly scares him but I am not the one who will give up my life in the Netherlands to live with an ex inmate in the USA. I am really not going to do that to my children either. There is no future for them. Education/school everything is different.

I would have thought that when a man offers you a ring, that he wants to marry. I figured it wasn't just a pen pal friend.
I also believe that people get afraid when they come into the outside world and so there should be social support from a social worker when help is needed.
Of course I also thought about your children. If your children like him, they might even be happy if there is someone else additionally to play with, to live and talk with or to do something. I did not know that this is in the USA.

@suntree We never met, saw or heard eachother so there is hardly no info to know if you like someone.
My children know I write with prisoners but I never mention or show them. This is private.
I do not write with orisoners who say they are looking for a relationship.
I think the "might" is meant to make me believe he means it or whatever. I still have no clue (and no answer but that is common too).

I think that if someone really loves you, then he will say "I WILL put a ring on your finger", when it comes to marriage. Or he will not even say that. He will just DO that without saying it.
