Soon it will be 2020.

Sounds interesting even futuristic but if it comes to it nothing changes.
Life goes on and it will not be different from yesterday or the day before yesterday.
If you are single or a single parent with (little) children there is not much chance to celebrate if family and friends do not invite you or you can not invite them.
The past 35 years are ruled by my children, their needs, and they are not fond of boring meetings of adults talking and drinking.

I mainly stayed home.
My family never invited me from the age of 17 on I spent it alone, went to bed as I felt the need to sleep, felt miserable and there even been New Year's Eves I was too sick to sit and spent a great holiday season with high fever in bed.

New Years' Eve, midnight. It is nothing to look forward too if you are alone, exhausted, are tied.
The people are changed. Neighbors no longer go outside and wish each other a happy New Year.
Only a few buy fireworks. I am fine with that. It only makes a mess.

New Year's Eve in the Netherlands...
I doubt big parties were given ever.
We stay home or with family and eat "oliebollen" en "apple beignets". Some people eat potato-meat-salad or order food.
A comedian keeps his "new year conference" on television. It depends on the one asked if it is good, funny or... extremely boring. I have no television so I save myself that misery.

No one does a good deed these days. Christmas is over and the spirit long is forgotten.
Plans are made for the new year. Those who still make them will not keep them otherwise they would have started earlier.
If it comes to good intentions I doubt people still make a list with it or have at least one.
The older you get the more you give up on the hopes, goals, intentions you once had. Simply because it is no longer important.

As soon as Christmas is over the jolly feeling is too.

The New Year in the Netherlands starts with classic concerts.
Many gave up on visiting them. Too long driving, too expensive or too drunk and the New Year's dive. No matter if it is freezing you jump into the sea (you are, not me).

January 2nd is a normal day.
We work again and soon taxes need to be paid. Enough stress to fill out papers and find a way to get those high amounts. Although everyone knows about it, no one seems to save for it. How strange.

I never plan anything for New Year's Eve.

If you are ill it is useless and better to be realistic instead of making false promises.
How I will celebrate it this year I don't know yet. One year I was up in the air in a plane, most years in bed long before 00:00 and only once I had some kind of celebration with the family of a schoolmate (by now 40 years at least ago). It was the only time I think it was a celebration, I enjoyed it and I have good memories of it.

As long as I can do as I like I am satisfied. Every day can be New Year's Day or Eve, the right moment to scare the bad ghosts/spirits away and start something new.
