What do you do with... rice?

in CCC4 years ago

I love rice.

For a long time, my youngest refused to eat it although it never tasted it. If you asked why not the answer was "only mom eats rice."
These days all my children eat price no matter how I prepare it.

Some say there's a huge difference between rice and rice which mainly show in the price. Others say rice is rice and it doesn't matter if it's broke, short or long A or B quality. Can you see the difference?

This rice is my favourite. You do not need to wash it before you cook it. The cooking time (low fire) is eight minutes. After that time you put it in a sieve and back in a closed pan. It has to stay for 15 minutes). It gives you a nice dry rice. The rice water I give to the wolves._

The main thing I do with rice is cooking it.
I rarely fry it.
We seldom eat rice these days if it's plain rice. No salt, spices, meat or vegetables added. We eat it this way or at times with some butter.

Out of cooked rice I make porridge.
Not daily, not weekly, not even once a month. Just for some periods mainly during winter. Before I made "rice milk" now I skip the milk. It's too expensive to use milk for everything and there's no need to.
I use rice, water, and vanilla sugar and put it on a low fire. A bit of cinnamon or raisins makes it taste good too. The porridge is our dinner, never our breakfast.

As a child I loved to eat "rijstevlaai".
It's translated into rice flan but our "vlaai" looks completely different as what I saw on photos on the internet.
This pie (vlaai) is officially eaten in the South of the Netherlands (the province Limburg but you find them all over the country now).

A vlaai officially has 2 parts, a pie crust made out of dough that has a lot in common with bread and a filling (fruit like cherries or rice for example).
These days you see those pies with all kinds of fillings plus toppings. Whipped cream and chocolate for example or custard underneath the fruit.

Here you see a photo of what a vlaai looks like these days.
If you have some milk rice/porridge left you can use it for making this pie.

Although I like it I only made a few times Nasi in my life.
Nasi is boiled/fried rice with species, vegetables, bacon and meat and it's a side dish.

You like this rice?

Or do you like this one more?

The first photo is a B brand.
You need to wash the rice, cook it for at least 20 minutes, use the sieve, wait and hope it's done.

The second photo is the washed rice from the box of rice.
No washing needed just cooking for 8 minutes, etc and guess what? It's cheaper as the B rice plus looks and tastes better.

What a mess!! Waste of money and your time.

Yes. 🙁

I like rice. I like it sweet with cinnamon and little sugar or with vegetables or meat and also with roasted peaches. I always wash rice beforehand, because I have heard that it has been treated with a lot of pesticides in Asia. Italian rice, I did not hear that, but as a precaution I wash every rice.

Some rice you have to wash because of the way it is (not) treated. The fast cooking rice is treated in some way so it's ready last.
I am interested in your rated patches recipe.

It would be great if you join this contest too.
