About my Name

Thanks @anomadsoul for the nomination! I was tapped by A Nomad Soul to explain a bit more about my username "voronoi" and how it came to be. So, here's the story...

I <3 Patterns

Hi, my real name is Kirk. I'll be the first to admit - I'm a pattern guy. I am obsessed with maps, textures and networks - which is one of the reasons I was first drawn in to the blockchain universe. I like to think about the invisible gears churning that shape the cryptocurrency ecosystem. My obsession with the blockchain onion expanded as I continued to peel it. So simply put, I wanted a username that reminded me of those diagrams and patterns - a blend of interests - past and present.

When I landed on @voronoi, I was working as an urban designer at the architecture firm Cooper Robertson in New York City. The name itself had everything to do with a pattern project that I was working on at the time.

The Fabric of a Streetscape

I was very fortunate to be a Lead Designer and Project Manager on the Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue Streetscape in Coral Gables, Florida. I worked on this project for close to three years, from beginning to end and was incredibly lucky to witness it being finished (a very rare thing in architectural practice).

I'll write a post series on the overall design and pattern - but for right now - here's a sneak peak of the new restaurant district “Giralda” in Coral Gables, Florida. It’s now open to the public, so if you’re in the area definitely go check it out -

Nodes and Oddities

The Giralda streetscape pattern is approximately 40,000 square feet of red-yellow-blue-yellow-red mosaic. Concentric circles radiate from the center points of palm trees, flowering trees, light poles and other elements. The circles overlap counter-clockwise and have super cool "clash" points where oddities in the pattern are revealed. It’s a dynamic pattern that gets even more dramatic with an afternoon rain shower - a signature of the Miami area - and also the inspiration behind the ripple effect of the concentric pavers.

The distances between trees and light poles were largely choreographed through the zoning required by local and state laws, measurements for parking spaces, buffers for storefront properties and loading zones. Our team was inspired by patterns found in nature, voronoi diagrams, water ripples and triangulated geometries.

Voronoi diagrams use the same logic of center points to generate organic in-between zones visible in the animation, below:

A Voronoi diagram is a partitioning of a plane into regions based on distance to points in a specific subset of the plane. That set of points (called seeds, sites, or generators) is specified beforehand, and for each seed there is a corresponding region consisting of all points closer to that seed than to any other. These regions are called Voronoi cells. The Voronoi diagram of a set of points is dual to its Delaunay triangulation. (Source.)

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT DUDE!!!!!!

You do a beautiful job too.

I am extremely shocked, normally the patterns make me felt dizzy but this one make me feel comfortable, it makes me want to stay there and just relax.

Thanks man! I really appreciate that, it was a wild project. Being there on the ground its very fun and different, not too dizzying ;)

Ah man this is very interesting. I knew about the pattern liking, but I wasn´t aware it played such an important role in your life. The Giralda streetscape seems like the perfect project for a pattern junkie. I´ve never been to Florida but I´ve been to NYC and I can imagine how cool it must´ve been to work in a big architecture firm in the mother of all cities. Thanks for joining the mini contest, it was cool to find out more about your username man :D

Thanks for the nomination man!

A nice fix for a pattern junkie indeed. If you are ever in the Miami area it's a cool spot to check out ;)

So good you told us about that...! It's just great to learn about why you choose that username and now it's so clear. And I can imagine your happiness when seeing all this finished.

Just an amazing work Kirk....I mean @voronoi! ;)

Thank you for the kind words @leotrap! ;)

It was certainly a great feeling seeing it all put together!

Very cool and one of the more unique usernames on Steemit.

And nice work with all the circles. Very interesting effects.

What was different about this project than the others, since you said it's not common to have the opportunity to see a project from start to finish. Are you not generally a project manager then?

Good question! It very much depends, some project teams have (or rotate) project managers. It really depends on the firm structure and how busy the office is when a new project arrives.

During my time there, I was only a project manager on maybe two or three projects.

what a beautiful concept of patterning as a way to view life and engage with it. And given this interest, you chose such a well-suited username!

And that streetscape in Coral Gables is just stunning! I have seen it before but it strikes me as even more amazing with the shadows of the palms over the radiating circular patterns---this is really extraordinary, I really want to experience it in person. A project to be proud of!!
I really enjoyed this post :-)

I thought you might appreciate those patterns @natureofbeing! I should do a whole other post about the stone that was selected for it. Thank you so much for the kind words!

Have you done the name challenge yet??

Definitely another post on the stone selection! And no I haven't done the name challenge yet ;-)

Fabulous post. If you never did another thing you could be happy with such an achievement. The patterns in the pedestrian zone are fantastic, and the photo with the palm tree shadows leave me looking for the right word... I'm going with dazzling.

They (my old firm) spoiled me with such a great project. Thank you so much @roused!

I thought that name corresponded to initials of their first and last names but it was wrong, we already know part of your story and the birth of your name.

That architectural marvel in Florida is incredible, tremendous talent that you have.

That pattern filling gif is so satisfying! How amazing to see it transform to reality

I'm obsessed with patterns too but never heard of voronoi diagrams before this. Definitely looking more into it now. Love where your username comes from @voronoi!

Now I understand why VORONOI is your username you use... I work as a Interior Designer here in United Arab Emirates. And your abstract work is really amazing! And the workers who did this actually is really a professional worker! They follow what is really in the design!

Thanks @kennyroy! They did a fantastic job. We worked closely to make sure everything turned out okay. I must say, it was pretty exhausting! :)

Indeed! This was really fantastic!

Really wonderful
