Is SnapChat Doomed?
This piece appeared on my Linkedin feed and was very interesting:
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/where-did-snapchat-go-wrong-avtar-ram-singh
Written by the Head of Social at Publicis Singapore, i.e. an author who probably knows a thing or two about marketing in the new digital age, the essay goes through a number of issues with Snapchat, and simultaneously touches on some of the broader travails of digital marketing.
I have to admit, first and foremost, that I am nothing more than an armchair speculator of the Snapchat story.
However, among the problem areas the following are cited in the article:
- One dimensional user experience (which is linked to a decline in unique viewers per Snap)
- High cost of creating idiosyncratic content
- Limited metrics available to track advertising Return On Investment very important for Brands)
- Aggressive competition; comparative unpopularity with social media influencers.
The conclusion is striking:
“As things stand, the company isn’t in a very good place. They’re finding it difficult to pivot into a space where they’re going to find financial fortune, their user figures aren’t picking up.
Could this be the last year Snapchat is at the centre of so much discussion?
Will they be a precautionary and a “what could have been” tale come 2018? What are your thoughts?
Remove the Snapchat reference from the quote above and this probably makes you think about a number of companies engaged.
The way I see it, in an online world where network effect can be incredibly meaningful, there is very little room for the “also rans”.
The issue for Snapchat is that Zuckerberg has a hard on for them. He tried to buy then, was turned away, so now he wants to crush them. It seems whatever advancements Snapchat comes out with, Facebook soon follows. Marky has the subscriber base so he can play copycat and the me too game and still succeed.
This is good for Steemit. The longer that the big guys are watching the traditional entities as competition, the more cover that is provided for Steemit. This platform isnt even on Zuckerberg's radar at the moment.
Thank you for your comment.
I totally agree. Corporate War
For some reason I think it's not doomed due to it's originality but it is not going anywhere as of right now.
