According to Microsoft’s 2019 Manufacturing Trends report, the average price for an IoT sensor has declined from US$1.30 in 2004 to US$0.44 in 2018.
Microsoft estimates there will be 36.13bn connected IoT devices by 2021.
Analysis and Comments
Microsoft’s full report (published in January) can be found here and is well worth a glance – although it is obviously worth noting that the company stands to benefit from continued high growth in the IoT through hardware and cloud sales.
An interesting takeaway from the article rather than the report is that according to a survey by McKinsey from earlier this year, some companies have struggled to move IoT projects into to full-scale production, with less than 30% of respondents having moved past a pilot phase.
While continued decline in sensor cost is obviously a plus in making use-cases cheaper for those wanting to experiment, investors are not sure how much of an impact a further decline in (already cheap) sensor tech will have on moving these projects past pilot stages.
It is a good resource for your products to have a lot of development in production, I think that the cost of the products should be balanced in terms of production
The declining price of all things under informational technology is what is speeding up the progress of things. At each layer, we see a great deal of progress. It all converges together for massive growth and expansion.
Give it another couple years and we will be amazed at the difference that is taking place.
Yes, I will put it back soon ^^. Thank you for the heads up.
I agree that it will grow but be careful of price pressure for sensors, it seems it is already a “commodity” and therefore big Chinese manufacturers will probably control the volumes .
