Some thoughts on “Design education”

Most of the people in India has a opinion that designing is easy. If a child doesn’t want to study after his 12th, the best option that the parents can think of is to send him into design school. I also had the same opinion when I started my course.

But the things are completely different here. I find designing more difficult than any other line of study, be it engineering or medical. There are no books of designing. Whole world is your teacher, anything can be your inspiration, and your mind can think out of the box. I am considering these things as a problem because there is no limit. There are no boundations, no set of rules to follow and I personally find this limitless nature hard to adopt.

The studies going on in Engeneering colleges or management colleges have a definite pattern or curriculum. The students know their particular topic and it depends on the students in how much detail they want to study that topic. In their exams, the students are judged on their knowledge of the particular subject but in designing, the student can not be judged because everyone has a different way of perceiving things and accordingly they create concepts with their creativity. Interesting part is no one can get fail in a design exam, if a student can justify his work, he is passed.

Talking about it’s positive part, I don’t think any other line of education could have helped me so much in opening my mind as design did. Design is all about creating solutions in a creative way. In the quest of doing things creatively, we pushed our mind barriers and started thinking out of the box. This way we come up with the ideas, that no one would have thought about them before or execute them before. After thinking about the idea, the most important part which I loved is executing the idea. Actually it is the toughest part, anyone can think crazy but executing it properly is not everyone’s cup of tea.
Apart from my particular field of jewellery, I have gained many other skills in different fields. I have learnt photography and post-processing of the photos, many computer softwares and worked with different materials like wood, clay, brass, plaster of Paris, acrylic, etc.

Talking about my overall growth, Design education has helped me a lot in expanding my boundaries. The pressure of doing things in a creative manner has also troubled me a lot. But I kinda like those troubles because I feel I am learning from each of my problem and getting better day by day.

Thanks for reading 📖. Let me know what do think about it in the comments below.
