The Biggest Doggo Puppy Ever (needs your time)
This is Kalervo, a rescue sight hound from Spain. He is soon three years old and because of his life’s earlier circumstances he now behaves like a small puppy even though he is bigger than the average male galgo.
Like many others, he was rescued from a galguero’s farm somewhere in Spain. Galgos are bread to hunt rabbits and they’re usually trained in inhumane and despicable conditions (dragged behind cars, forced to live in dodgy, crammed sheds). If at some point it turns out they’re not up to the task, they’re often tortured slowly to death as they’re not considered even worth the bullet to be put down mercifully.
We went to see Kalervo in Helsinki where he had been placed in foster care. He’d been discovered at an overcrowded (because of too many abandoned dogs), crammed dog shelter lying down and wounded badly as other dogs were biting him. His wounds seemed he hadn’t been moving at all for awhile, he had scars all over his body, he was malnourished and dry and his intestines were showing from his lower abdomen. According to doctors treating him his neck injuries indicated that he had also been trained by being dragged behind a car+beaten with a baton or a similar object.
As I saw him lying on a settee the first time and just how exhausted and scarred he was, I had to gasp in order not to break into tears. He didn’t even lift his head to see the visitors.

We brought him home that day and his recuperating began. I would lie if I say it’s been easy - but it’s been definitely worth it! We’ve given him a good home and the base to finally become the dog he really is and he has taught us a lot about life, the nature and patience!
He had lived with us a couple of months when he barked for the first time (at the mailman, obviously). We figured it was the first sound he’d made in at least six months or the time he had been in the country! Like said, he’s taller than regular galgos - and still, even though he's built like a brick shit house, he finds a lot of things scary: cars, buses, shadows, yelling kids, people with stick-like items, the staircase, sound of soda bottle opening (though he's mostly over this).
Also in spite of his large frame, he behaves like a little puppy: he can easily climb on the sofa and have a lie down on a sitting person or his granny whippet friend. One of the amazing things we’ve witnessed is how he’s slowly opening up to his character - something that he’s never had before!

Proper head gear for walks helps always - indoors you just look overly cool and a tad miffed
One reason why I’m writing this is I want everybody know that today February first is the World Galgo Day and it’s set in order to tell the world about the poor treatment of these noble creatures. Around this time the hunting season in Spain is over which is the season of animal abuse with certain farmers. The dogs are hung slowly from trees, thrown down into wells, abandoned etc. Some hunters who choose to ‘merely’ abandon their dogs cripple them purposely in order to unable their return home.
You can find more information for instance by googling: diadelgalgo, galgorescue, worldgalgoday, stopgalgueros. An organization called Galgos del Fenix has recently made this video depicting of the poor treatment of these animals.
Viewer discretion is advised: the material in the linked video is brutal and may not be suitable for everyone
I have not taken part in producing this video, nor do I claim any copyright to it. I'm sharing it only to spread information and understanding about the severe abuse of these animals.
This is Kalervo spreading love for you all.
He has cheated death and fate - this is his lesson for us all.

Aww I love this! Your dog is so cute, I love the pictures with the blankets over his head. Beautiful story also 😊
Thanks! Him and his sidekick are so sweet and nice (to each other and everybody else)!
He is a beautiful dog. I can't believe they get treated so badly, there is no excuse for doing that to a dog, any animal for that matter.
I'm so glad he's finally coming out of the shell he's used to try to protect himself, poor boy.
May I make one suggestion for future posts with video's like you've got in this one...perhaps it would be better to put the warning before the link to the video instead of after. I hope my suggestion isn't coming across as criticism, it just might be better to warn people before they click it is all I'm saying.
Dogs are such beautiful and loving animals and to basically torture them to death with the treatment in the video is disgusting and I hope there is a special place in hell for people that do that to them. :(
God bless you for going to the shelter, bringing him home, and giving him time to adjust and learn that not all humans are horrible and abusive. :D
Have an awesome day! :D
Thanks! And your advice is duly noted. I thought it would pop out with a bigger font afterwards but you're right: I should do it the other way around.
Kalervo thanks you as well, @frostyamber!
Be well and have a nice weekend!
You're welcome. I always worry about giving advice or offering tips, as I'm not an expert by any means, I just thought some people might not be able to handle most of that video, especially when it gets to the worst examples of abuse, and advanced warning would be beneficial to them. :D
Kalervo really is a very handsome boy. :D Did you name him or was that the name from the shelter you got him from? Does the name mean anything special?
We've six puppies here (all dogs are puppies to mean, young at heart), we've got Husky/Rottweiler/Collie Mix for the grand-puppies and Husky (dad), Rottweiler/Collie (mom) for the puppies. We spoil them all a bit. You are welcome to visit my blog to see pictures of them anytime. :D
Take care, God bless you. :D Have an awesome weekend! :D
He had a Spanish name but we wanted to give him another one. Kalervo is a very old Finnish name - according to Google it's from the Finnish epic mythology/poetry compilation Kalevala. In the story Kalervo is the father of Kullervo, one of the main characters. We decided the name as it sounds funny for a dog but still seems to suit him perfectly, hehe.
I think its a wonderful name, and he's very handsome, almost regal with the golden blanket, and Kalervo is kind of regal sounding too. :D
God bless you and your family, two and four-legged. :D Have an awesome day! :D
George Washington had 36 dogs–all Foxhounds–with one named Sweetlips.
Thank you so much for sharing this story here.
I am so grateful to you for saving this beautiful soul. My heart is broken just thinking of what he went through, but I'm so happy that he got to know real love and caring and safety, that he can enjoy life like he should and be himself.
Thank you thank you so much!

Big big hugs to the both of you, from our own little rescue family.
Thanks so much for your kind words and supporting our cause!
He is super handsome ❤❤
Thanks! Yup, he really is! And lazy; as I was looking through pictures for this post I noticed in most of them he's lying down, hehe
