Canon Firmware Add Ons - Magic Lantern Software, my opinion.

Has videographer, one thing that i try to achieve e to get the most quality from my shooting.
Sometimes a good camera does the job, Alexa, Red, etc, but because i died won the EuroMillion, i had to get a “poor man” tool that would do the job.
A couple of years ago, i discover Magic lantern software add-on.
Magic Lantern software, is an add on that works in your canon eos camera, and adds new features to your camera.
in this post, i m not going through all the features of magic Lantern software, i m just gonna talk about some points i consider relevant.

One thing great about this add on, is that it s not a firmware thats install in your camera, but is install in your CF/SD card. One of the high points of this, is that if you wanna use the special add on, you just have to put the card with Magic Lantern on the camera.

in Video mode, tools like on-screen overlays, headphone monitoring, control frame rate, are some of the features that allow you to capture footage with confidence.

besides the popularly known for video features, magic lantern will give you a broad array of features that will help get better pictures.

What are the main Features in Movie and Photo Program:

Movie:
-Raw recording at 14 bit uncompresses video, in CF/SD Card.
- Full control of recording frame rate
- HDR Video
- Full control over the image Bitrate

Shoot:
-Bracketing for exposure, flash, or depth-of-field.
-In-camera intervalometer.
-Custom bulb timer for extra-long exposures.
-Motion detection.
-Silent pictures.
-Record voice tags for photos / videos.

there are a couple questions that normally are asked before using Magic Lantern.
one question is, does magic lantern replaces the Canon Firmware?
No! because magic lantern runs on the card, as an add on over canons firmware. You will still be able to aces the Canons original firmware.

Is it Legal?
This is a clean room / black box reverse engineering effort and as such should be OK.

the million dollar question, is it safe?
one of the main question is it safe? well, No!
Magic Lantern was created by reverse engineering an undocumented system that controls hardware. Therefore, Magic lantern Dev Cant be certain that it s 100% safe.
Never had a problem but you never know….
And keep in mind that Magic lantern firmware is distributed with No Warranty and No Guarantees. It might work. It Might not. it hasn’t destroyed any camera yet, but who knows.

My opinion is if you are a DSLR Canon user, photo or video, and you get to that point where you are needing more power to your camera, i would consider to get Magic Lantern and put it running in your camera. The best way, i think, is to get one of your cards with the Magic Lantern firmware, and then have normal formatted on camera cards. that way you can choose which firmware to use in that special moment.

I hope you will try it, it worth the work.

I've used the little brother of the Magic Lantern project called CHDK on a cheap Canon point and shoot before (I think it was a Canon PowerShot SD750). It produces some surprising results even on really low end cameras, and poses zero risk to the device. It's worth trying if you have a spare SD card and your camera is supported.

Hi, i complety agree with you... i stated by "cracking" my old lumix GH2, and at that time i was amazed about the quality i could get, then when i tried ML with eos5mark2, i was amazed!
I really tell people to try it!
thanks for the comment.
