INTRODUCTION

Hello my Steem Family. It's such an exciting moment to be doing this again. I trust you are doing great.

On my end, I am doing fine as well. Merry Christmas in a bit.

Below is a fulfilment of my task, Achievement 3 : An Article on Plagiarism.

Plagiarism? What does it mean?

One might wonder the etymology of the word. Well, "plagiarism' is formed from Latin word "plagiarius" which means "kidnapper", "seducer", "plunderer"
source

From the above, you can deduce that somewhat, plagiarism was seen as a person and not in the context of art.

Interestingly, in around 80AD, a Roman Poet Martial used the word to depict stealing art( someone's work/writing).

In 1601, the word found its way into the English Language through the Satirist, Ben Johnson, who used "plagiary" to describe "literary theft" source

However, to cleary describe the word "plagiarism", I will term it as impinging on one's copyright, as intellectual theft.

Collins dictionary defines it as "the practice of using or copying someone else's idea or work and pretending that you thought of it or created it"
source.

You know I can understand there is a bit of a problem as we have a stock reserve in our minds of other people's thoughts, ideologies, etc, by virtue of having read them or come across their works.

And that's why the clever thing to do, is to have a journal where you keep or jot down quotes or sentences or paragraphs that were profound or resonated with you and the source where they came from, that way you'll not be found guilty as you have done your due diligence.

It wouldn't be fair claiming someone else's work as yours, right?

I mean, just imagine if it was done to you too? So painful.

Instances of Plagiarism:

Remember, it can only be plagiarism, when you fail to give adequate reference. Here are some forms or types of plagiarism:

References to types:source

• Global Plagiarism. This is when you pass of material, resource or writing as yours. When in actual fact it isn't.

It is "global" because you decide to show off to the whole world that you are the author of such content or art and this my friend comes with grave consequences.

• Verbartim Plagiarism: Now, this doesn't mean you can't quote word for word. But it becomes theft when you fail to show attribution(- who said or wrote down what you are quoting or copying)

When you fail to show your source and claim originator of that statement, content, art, etc. You have committed this sin.

• Paraphrasing Plagiarism: oh my gosh! Do you know we are far the most guilty of this.

Paraphrasing means tweaking around someone's statement or content to make it sound like you.

Well, it isn't bad. But when you fail to notify your audience or whomever, where that content is coming from, then you have created.

• Patchwork Plagiarism: This is when you think you are clever enough and gather different phrases, notions, etc from other people and then add them up to form new content.

It wouldn't do you harm if you just quote your source even if you'll be paraphrasing but just tell your audience where it came from.

• Self Plagiarism: I'm sure you are wondering, how can I steal my work? Your head is spinning around, right?

Let me explain:

Self Plagiarism means that you are "reusing work which you have previously submitted or published"source. This occurs more in academics, where you reuse work which you have submitted to be graded by your college professor or it has already been graded and then you use that same content without the consent of your professor.

CONCLUSION :

Is it possible to do away with plagiarism? The answer is a resounding yes.

I'll reiterate, plagiarism only occurs when you fail to acknowledge your source or give proper attribution.

So you must consistently work by this principles:

•Always give references to the ideas you know are not original to you.

•Seek consent from your college professor before you reuse previous works that have been graded.

•Make use of the "plagiarism checker" to know if you have omitted reference.
Opps! We might miss it sometimes and that's when the "checker" comes in handy.

P. S: I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette in Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
