Achievement 2: Basic security on Steemit. By @victork
After carefully reading the instructions provided by @cryptokannon regarding steem keys, I now make my achievement 2 post;
Securing my account is very important, because any loos of the keys most importantly my master key is means loosing access to my account.
I retrieved my keys following the creation of my account with the help of @venon who introduced me to steemit.
There are four different generated keys and they all are important in differen aspects which are:
POSTING KEY
The posting keyI is used for social network actions such as posting, commenting on posts and voting.
This key has limited permissions therefore can’t be used for monetary actions, even so the posting key must be kept safe.
Posting Key permissions
• Publish a post or comment
• Edit a post or comment
• Upvote or downvote
• Resteem content
• Follow people
• Mute accounts
Active Key
This key has additional permissions for more sensitive monetary-related actions, like transferring and exchanging tokens.
Wallet related actions are authenticated using the Active Key. Anyone who has access to this key can take your tokens. In order to keep your tokens safe, you must therefore store and keep this Key safe.
Active Key permissions:
The Active key is used to;
• Transfer tokens
• Power STEEM up or down
• SBD conversion
• Vote for witnesses
• Place an order on an exchange
• Certain profile changes
• Publish a Witness price feed
• Create a new user
Owner Key:
The owner key has the power to change all other keys, it can be used in recovering your account and therefore it is the most important key and should be securely saved offline.
I have securely saved an offline version of my owner key including all other steemit keys.
Owner Key permissions
Owner Key has the ability to:
• Reset Owner, Active, and Posting keys
• Recover your account
• Decline voting rights
Memo Key
The Memo Key is used to encrypt and decrypt private messages that are sent through the blockchain.
Memo Key permissions
• Send an encrypted message
• View an encrypted message
How to transfer tokens
Beside your tokens in your wallet, you'll see an arrow, tap on it to display a drop-down menu, then tap transfer and fill in the recipient's name.
You'll be asked to authenticate the action with your active, owner or master password.
How to power up
Go to wallet, beside your steem token, tap the little arrow to display a drop-down menu, tap power up and fill in amount.
You need your active, owner or master password to authenticate the transaction.
Conclusion
Loosing your master key means loosing your account! Therefore you should endeavor to save an offline copy of your Master Key and keep it safe. Login into your account using the appropriate key for the appropriate section. Do not disclose your keys with any third party site or app if you are not sure of the app or site.
