Toyama is an award winning ecological compact city. It located conveniently on the Sea of Japan only about 250km northwest of Tokyo is remarkably rich in natural beauty from the 1,200 meter deep waters of Toyama Bay to the 3,000 meter peaks of the Northern Japan Alps. This city if famed for its abundant and unique fresh seafood, and known since the medieval period as the medicine center of Japan and more recently as the glass art center of Japan. The city has continued to develop as thriving pharmaceutical and now high-tech economy which balances the traditional and the modern, nature and the arts.

Toyoma is home to the largest glass artist community in Japan and the Toyama Glass Art Studios, one of the finest in the world, is an important base for some 100 glass artists as well as the renowned Toyama Institute of Glass Art.
