Amazing Toyama City

The organisation that I work with was visited by Japanese investors from Toyama city sometime in June last year. In their visit, they talked about an Eco friendly city in Japan called Toyama.

Toyama is an award winning ecological compact city. It located conveniently on the Sea of Japan only about 250km northwest of Tokyo is remarkably rich in natural beauty from the 1,200 meter deep waters of Toyama Bay to the 3,000 meter peaks of the Northern Japan Alps. This city if famed for its abundant and unique fresh seafood, and known since the medieval period as the medicine center of Japan and more recently as the glass art center of Japan. The city has continued to develop as thriving pharmaceutical and now high-tech economy which balances the traditional and the modern, nature and the arts.

An Environmentally Friendly City

In Jan 2008, Toyoma was chosen to be the “Environmental Model Cities” because of its leading role in the reduction of global warming. Toyoma was chosen because of its “compact city” policy and its systematic efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A “zero CO2)” policy was adapted and the compact city plan includes ultra efficient trams, restructuring public transit to reduce people’s dependence on automobiles, streamlining energy requirements for urban activities, introducing a bicycle sharing system and developing an extensive “eco-town” where private companies are supported if they turn some form of waste – plastic, wood, old automobiles, food waste etc.

Toyoma is home to the largest glass artist community in Japan and the Toyama Glass Art Studios, one of the finest in the world, is an important base for some 100 glass artists as well as the renowned Toyama Institute of Glass Art.

City that Emphasises Community and Comfortable Lifestyle

Toyama city has been striving to improve childcare support programs, such as providing expert consultations for parents at its 12 childcare support center and conducting local projects that focus on the sound upbringing of children in each school district. The city has implemented a variety of measures for elderly, such as power rehabilitation, in an effort to support their health and maintain their living function.

A City Where Children Can be Active Learners

Tohama has combined elementary school and renovated junior high schools. The city has worked with educational institutes to relinquish areas of managerial power over to the school’s governing bodies. The city has also supported the development of programs that allow students to experience science and nature in their surrounding environment.

Future Focused Industry and a comfortable Lifestyle

With a total shipment value of approximately 11 Billion dollars in 2012, Toyama excels in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products industrial machinery, precision electronic and precision machinery parts, and specialise packaging. The city has developed a number of innovative measure in revitalize the local economy and provide employment opportunities. These include the creation of manufacturing and technology hubs, programs to attract new investment, and improving access to loan for small businesses and start-ups.
