A Home-Grown Snack - Nopales/Prickly Pear Cactus Pad

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

Good afternoon, Steemians!

I wanted to show a snack I just ate that’s incredibly easy to grow. This is the nopal or prickly pear cactus pad leaf.

I used the “broil” setting on my electric stove

Added a bit of sweet basil pasta sauce

The nopal is by far the easiest thing that I grow on my homestead. You just break off a pad, dig a hole, put it in horizontally and water it a few times a month until you start to see new pads coming out of the ground. It can handle the colder temperatures here in FL and also drought. I personally have about 5-6 cactus plants growing in my yard, on with over 50 pads. It’s basically free and very nutritious food!

Hello @vegansilverstack. I love nopales! They are very versatile and nutritious. Though I don't grow my own, they are very plentiful in most Latino groceries. You might like this recipe that I developed and posted on my blog which featured nopales (https://www.atmemestable.com/southwestern-stuffed-sweet-potato/). Also, have you made juice or jelly out of the prickly pear of the cactus? Absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing your post. I'm definitely going to try cooking nopales this way.

Mmm that recipe sounds good!!!

@vegansilverstack, If you get the recipe a try, let me know what you think. All the best!

I had never heard of these before! Your homestead sounds wonderful. Keep the posts coming!

Will do! Thank you!

Looks delicious. Not sure that would grow in our cold, wet climate. Nice work mate!

I had a wonderful client a few years ago who was from Mexico City. He brought me some of these that his wife had made one time. They were delicious!

tHOUGHT this a cool idea ♦♦ And a Good suggestion as it's Cheap for people to do..

So kudos to you - I bet the sweet basil pasta sauce helps it be palatable.

It will help me one day attain my goal of being mostly self-sufficient as far as growing food goes!

Yes, superb (wise) thinking on your part .

I would like to try that it looks good! Simple honest food

I hope you do one day!
