Self progression through rollerblading.

How's it going Steemers?

I would like to share my thoughts on my self progression, through my years of rollerblading.

Disaster to royal to gap

I have learnt many things from playing on these kids toys called rollerbades like,

  • How to over come my fears
  • Determination to land a trick no matter how hard you fall
  • Creativity and to look at my surroundings in a different way
  • Proving self confidence
  • And how to switch your mind off and just focus on living in the moment (which we call "being in the zone" )

I got my first pair of skates on my 12th birthday and who would have thought these toys would change my life forever!
25 years later and I havent stopped rolling 😁

Now when I first started rollerblading I had no idea what I was doing. I would spend every afternoon practicing in the car park across the road from my house. And I would meet up on weekends to skate at schools with my friends and we all learnt how to roll down stairs backwards. This was before grinding handrails was even a thing.

As the years passed and my trick vocabulary grew I lived everyday for the feeling of freedom while rolling. We would explore our city every weekend trying to find a new spot to do tricks on like handrails, ledges and gaps to jump.

Now the first thing I had to learn very fast was how to fall properly. Because to learn all these tricks you are going to fall ALOT!! This is a lesson that I have taken into everyday life. No matter how many times you fail never give up.

Being a street skater, we will always explore the city and look at architecture with a different eye than the normal person. We find ourselves in back alley ways looking for things to skate. Not only city exploration but the people we run into as well while we are out skating. In the heart of my city was a row of awesome ledges that we would always skate. And at the same spot a lot of homless people slept there so we got to know these people and would always have a chat and hear their stories. Every now and then I would bring some extra food with me to hook these guys up. Man some of their stories were funny, some scary but it was always good to have a chat and laugh with them.

Once I had learned the basics of doing tricks the rest is a constant mind game. Because the fact is if you can do the trick on a small rail, there is no reason you can't do the exact same trick on a rail with a 15 foot drop on one side. Its all in your head. Block out the fear and just focus on the trick and you will land it.

Back side unity

Sometimes the fears wins. If you get to a spot and dont attempt the trick in the first 3 run ups, it plays with your mind too much. So it's best to walk away and come back to the spot with a clear head, so you dont get hurt. Just like difficult decisions in life, they are always better to make the right decision with a clear mind.

Growing up being a rollerblader kept me out of alot of trouble because I had something to focus my time on. A lot of other friends got into drugs and petty crime to pass their time but I preferred to spend my time at the skatepark. Where I made life long friends.

Being a rollerblader, it is an individual sport not a team sport so you dont have to rely on anyone else to progress, and to win competitions. But in saying that it is always better to skate with your mates to push each other to progress and get you hyped to land the trick.

Perception is a strange thing. Until reading this, my view of Rollerbladers was aimless time wasters. How wrong was I!
You have the brains and articulation to not only master rollerblading but I feel sure you are very successful in life.
Great read, I'm glad I stopped by.

Thanks @scarletpimpernel , my mum thought the exact same thing when I was younger :) that I was just wasting my time rollerblading. But I ended up traveling the world from rollerblading and started my own business.
Glad you enjoyed the read thanks for stopping by mate :)

Wow this is tremendous and thrilling, I compared you roller skating the image when you were 12 and 25 years later it goes on to show that your skating journey had been a total success really, you spoke about the fear and I just discovered that skating is all about curtailing the fear and embracing the courage really.
The skill learning too is very essential and learning and pulling it off are two different things, what a way to go buddy, amazing journey.

Thanks @josediccus. It has been a wild journey thats for sure haha but this is what i live for. Thanks for stopping by. Much love brother 🍺🍺

Awesome story my friend. And all these photos are super-stylish.
I can relate to most of your words as a skater myself. You learn a lot from the streets, especially if you grow up skating them.Nice to see you got that big payout bro.
Yo Peace

I'm always amazed by kids enthusiasm when learning rollerblade. It's a fantastic sport and keeps you off harmful activities while helping find life-long friends.

I especially like how you emphasize the importance of learning how to fall. And falling is failing, isn't it? But without it you can't learn anything.

So the person who falls the most, wins...

Thanks for sharing you experience here!

that's exactly right if you don't fall you don't learn from your mistakes. Thanks for stopping by :)

Its incredible what you do with these bad boys, highly impressive! they are really extreme moves. You've been rollerblading for like 25years now? That's a really long time, it must have been an exciting and thrilling journey, you seem really passionate about it all.

I love how this has been able to change your life, I mean, look at all the great things you've learnt. Who would have thought this much can be learnt from a sport? You must have opened your heart and your eyes to seeing all of these beautiful lessons and learning them all! I bet you can't imagine life without it now... Hahahah!

cheers @audreybits, yeah 25 years now. my body is very sore from the numerous broken bones and injuries but it was all totally worth it! I can't imagine life without it that fro sure :) ROLL FOREVER !!
Thanks for stopping by !

Oh man!! To keep up with that after all the broken bones and injuries shouts out how passionate you are about this, the feeling you get while at it and after it is totally worth it. The pains will surely go away someday.... KEEP ROLLING!!

My pleasure!

Hello very interesting post, i never thought skaters looks at the city with a different eye vut it does make sense.

We are always looking at the architecture for some to skate ☺

Yes that is so funny:) but it makes sense lol

Oh man, tell me you have videos of your tricks.

I must admit that I felt a little empathy with your post. I don't remember the age but I know that at Christmas, as a gift, my parents allowed me to buy a skateboard; after all, I had the whole year talking about it (I think the TV show Rocket Power had a big influence on that). Anyway, the fact is that I finally bought it and I can tell you that I almost didn't dare to use it on the street. I don't know what the hell happened, I don't know if it was for fear of hurting me or that my classmates didn't practice skateboarding, but I ended up using it inside the house as a kind of bed with wheels. I just lay on my back on her and I moved around the house until we moved and I left her in the old house.
I don't know what would have happened to my life if I dared to use it (I don't plan to predict it either), but I'm glad to know that you faced your fears and turned them into fuel to continue doing what you like.

Greetings.

I have alot of videos of these tricks on my youtube channel vcclothingco but i will add them to dtube so stay tuned ☺ thanks for stopping by mate

Yess, dtube is the future!!. I'll be waiting.

I just uploaded a video from our shows in china, check it out and let me know what you think ☺

I'll do it! :)
