Why You Need To Read This Book | The 48 Laws Of Power | Review

in #blog8 years ago

A while ago I was searching for some good books on self-improvement when I stumbled across this wonderful piece of work or should I say one of the most cunning, ruthless and amoral book.

This was the first book written by Robert Greene in 1998 selling 1.2 million copies in U.S alone. I would say he really outdid himself, but that was not all this was just the first of the many bestsellers he was about to produce like 'The art of seduction' and another one of the greats '33 strategies of war'.

Robert really doesn't sugar coat anything and presents everything in a typical straight forward way that makes it so appealing. He just let's you know why you should be the one in power and not others having all the power over you. The way each story is told just makes you never want to stop reading.
The book is all about historical references and how the laws of power played their part to bring about massive changes in history. Make no mistake though this book is not a boring history lesson.
This book takes the philosophies from the greats like Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Carl Von Clausewitz, Napoleon Bonaparte and more with historical legacies of warriors, statesmen, seducers and con artists throughout history. This is truly a Bible for con men and psychopaths if used improperly.
Even though it might make you feel evil this book gives a proper insight why it's necessary to understand power play and how to play the power game to get where you want to be. Which is not something everyone understands so well.
The writing style of Robert is extremely straight forward and almost evil, although I love to read but I would suggest this is better worth listening to. You can find an audiobook easily. Listening to this book would only make you enjoy it more. Its amazingly instructive as if almost like a do's and don'ts list.
As it's said, If you want to learn a lesson it can found in history and this book teaches plenty them. With each Law you will find examples of how using the Law worked and breaking the Law caused someone's downfall.
Some of the laws which I really loved are -

Law 13

When asking for help, appeal to people's self intrest, never to their mercy or gratitude.

As a human being you'd have found asking someone's help can be such a pain sometimes cuz we simply don't know how to appeal to their intrest, simply understanding that an applying this Law can make a huge difference in their attitude towards you.

Law 9

Win through actions, Never through argument.

This is a simple Law to follow but is extremely powerful. This Law has helped me avoid many useless arguments and letting me focus on my actions to win over the situations in the end.

Law 29

Plan all the way to the end.

Without a plan something great can be started but, without planning to the end nothing finishes well. This Law and the 'Law 47 - Do not go past the mark you aimed for. - In the victory learn when to stop.' both have gone hand in hand for me giving a small advantage over others just cuz I knew how to plan well.

There are more amazing Laws each and everyone unique in their own way. Some Laws can be a little confusing about their application, but if kept in mind can be used at the right opportunities.
This book is not a one time read. Its a textbook to gain power. I've listened to this multiple times and its always useful as it helps you give a better insight of your situation.
When these Laws are applied with good intentions they can do wonders but when applied with bad intentions can destroy someone. This is truly a work of art and a must read for everyone. You would gain knowledge that will be help you throughout your lifetime and isn't that the reason why we read books anyway!
