I. The Lost City
Astira could see the skeletal outline of ancient canals. She could imagine Princess Leizu floating out to sea in a royal procession.
“Ozymandias- the historian left a time capsule somewhere at the end of a canal.”
Ozymandias tilted his head. He looked at Astira with his deep electronic eyes.
“Correct. It was only 3 galactic centuries in the past. He called the capsule a branching node in a network of historical possibilities. But he said it was unlikely to be important.”
Astira felt a chill run up her spine. She looked up to the ceiling of heaven. She closed her eyes.
“What did he look like?”
“He was old but spry. He came from Trantor & said his name was Harry.”
Ozymandias smiled as if he were human & recalled a fond memory.
Astira blacked out. She felt overwhelmed. She looked away. The network of canals stretched to the horizon, branching out in all directions.
“Ozymandias, you said he said it wasn’t likely to be important. Right?”
“Correct. He called it his message in a bottle- a galactic SOS just in case everything went haywire.”
Astira stood in silence.
“Ozymandias, who else knows this?”
“Nobody- except you. I follow the laws of robotics with exact precision & zero error.”
II. The Venetian World
Ivy heard the twinkling of a silver bell. She walked down a short flight of steps. She opened the door. A lean elderly woman in a flowing robe stood tall & firm on the short pier. She brandished a long cane.
“Merry Christmas child!” said Vivienne with a tight smile & regal air.
