MEANING OF PEACE

Peace refers to a state of friendliness that is without anger, it can be said to be the absence of war or violence; a situation or state of calm or quiet, and living in friendship. The above description defines peace, whether it is between individuals, groups, communities, or countries.

Peace is a value that permits social interaction, co-operation, and unity among members of any human society. The absence of peace is conflict. An agreement to end a war between two countries or a period without war within, or between one country and another country, is referred to as peace. Peace could be an emotional state or an internal state of mind. Therefore, the word "peace" goes beyond the absence of war for individuals or society.

TYPES OF PEACE

The two types of peace are:
(i) Negative Peace,
(ii) Positive Peace.

When peace is achieved by the use of coercion (force), it is called Negative
Peace. This is because, it is an action of making somebody do what he or she does not want to do, through using force or threatening to use force; or when somebody or a group is defeated by another. Such a peace does not satisfy the interest and needs of both parties in conflict. It is no permanent peace. The peace is likely to end later.

On the other hand, positive peace is peace achieved through negotiation and dialogue. The parties involved in the dispute will be made to meet each other or their representatives. The result of such interactions is usually peaceful resolution. This usually satisfies the needs, interests, and concerns of both parties involved in the conflict and enthrones a lasting peace known as positive peace. Example: Nigeria and Cameroun over Bakassi peninsula.

IMPORTANCE OF PEACE

Peace is a very vital virtue any person, group, or society should embrace for progress to be made in a I facets of our lives. Wherever there is peace, there is happiness, joy and progress; and this encourages human beings to co-operate and work towards a better I fe professionals in the area of science and technology will feel relaxed to devise tools, machines, equipment and other gaagets that will help to make our lives better. But where there is no peace, they will be more occupied with how to manufacture weapons of destruction. When there is peace, there is security of lives and property; and this encourages us to forge ahead in anything we do. Peace, especially positive peace, is devoid of bitterness and anger and brings visible development in all aspects of human life or of a society. Positive peace makes for peaceful.co-existence among nations. This brings unity and progress and P development.

WAYS OF PROMOTING PEACE

The following are some of the ways of promoting peace in any human society:

(i) Tolerance
(ii) Social Justice
(iii) Diplomacy.
(iv) Dialogue
(V) Human Rights

For us to have peace, we should learn to accommodate other human beings in our society and tolerate the differences that exist among people in respect of ideas and opinions. This brings peace.

Social justice has to be maintained without partiality. Treat people the way you would like yourself to be treated. Peace can be achieved and sustained in the society when there is justice and fair play.

We should respect human rights. The rights of people should be respected. We should respect the rights ians irrespective of ethnic origin or tribe, for us to have peace.

The same applies to our inter-actions with other nations of the world to our fellow human beings, for business to move smoothly. This sustains peace. Peace is better achieved through dialogue because the needs, concerns, and interests of parties involved should be taken care of; all of which bring a lasting peace in any human society. Dialogue is the best method of promoting peace in a society.
