To summarize, Judah sends Tamar, his daughter-in-law, off to live with her father until his third son Shelah is old enough to impregnate her. Tamar disguises herself as a harlot and gets impregnated by Judah.

Just as he had previously promised to her, his son Shelah, he promised to her a kid from his flock of sheep. He tries to make good on the latter promise, but cannot find her.

Genesis 38:24-26:
24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

So here we see Judah being magnanimous about his mistake of not fulfilling his promise to Tamar. He let’s her live and throws her out. Of course, it was a promise to a woman, which explains why The Jesus did not smite Judah.

The real winner in all this is Shelah, the third son, not having to dip into the sloppy seconds of his two dead brothers and his father.
