Computers for Everyone!

Less than a year ago I was looking for a way to help improve my community and ways that I could give back. I'm from a very poor area of the USA and I'm pretty poor myself so the options I had were pretty limited. But, I was able to come up with an idea that helps less fortunate people out and this idea also fits in well with what I know, computers.

What I decided to do was find older computers and clean them up a bit. After cleaning them up I started to give them away to less fortunate kids at local schools.

Ive been trying to find cheap deals on computers and I've also had a few given to me for free. I wiped the computers of data and installed an appropriate version of Linux that will run nicely given the computers specs I'm working with.

I installed basic software that will allow the people that receive them to get their school work done, browse the internet, etc. I also included links to documentation and videos about Linux to help get them familiar with their new systems.

I've only managed to do this with 9 computers so far. But, it's a nice feeling being able to give someone something that they need and can really make use of and I plan to continue doing it.

I've also been considering including a Steem account with these computers. Though I'm not sure how I should go about this. Anyone have any ideas? I think this would be great. It would provide these kids a way to make money by creating and sharing things they like. It would also get more people interested in blockchain technology. While it may not be a lot of people, it's some. And as I said before, I'm from a poor area so I'm sure some of them would love the opportunity to make a little money by posting online.

So, does anyone have any ideas on how I could accomplish this? If so, Id love to hear it!

By the way, earnings from this post will go towards the charity.

Thanks!

Take a look into the charity tribe, https://www.nobel.charity. It will be of help.

Very Cool! What a very important work that you are doing. I also like the fact that you use Linux Distros on the machine. That kind of opens up the idea to the kids about open source options.

Yeah that's one of my goals. It's just more viable to use Linux on older hardware. Stuff that would have trouble running Windows can handle Linux just fine.

I've been giving them to middle/early high school age kids. I have a couple friends who are teachers that help me out with that. But, they're young so hopefully it sticks with them. Thats around the age I discovered Linux and started getting an interest in it.

I was trying to think of a way to include Steem as well. Haven't really figured that part out yet.
