Agreed with the sentiment of the post.
In my view, ethics and morality go beyond the law and cultural/religious rules and customs and deals into the very point that you made, the values and beliefs that we want to share with our fellow people in order to cooperate and thrive together.
I believe morality is an ever changing way of looking at new situations and learning to adapt to changing circumstances.
What's amazing about it is that ethics deals with thoughts... What governs the ideas we have, how to caterogize our ideas in terms of social/practical usages, importance, relevance, and how to filter the ones we think are beneficial for ourselves and others and the ones that are detrimental to ourselves and others...
Morals deals with matters of the heart... As humans we have a moral compass... This is a kind of emotional intelligence that informs us on a visceral level whether something is healthy or damaging to ourselves...
We can see or experience something, and our moral compass will alert us it is bad vibrations that are polluting and affecting everything around us...
Between clear-minded and carefully thought out ethics, and honest open and integrity-driven morals, we have all the tools we need to adapt to our environment, the changes around us, and to live in a world that is healthy and prosperous for all of us!
That is why it is so important to live according to one's own ethical and moral codes...
To be honest about our thoughts and our emotions and strive for maximum health and vibrancy!

There's this interesting idea Ken Wilber put forth in one of his books that if you look at all the methods that exist historically or otherwise for entering into meditation or religious contemplation that the most commonly preached about and advocated by all the different religious strains is moral practice. Lord Buddha did not say, "go into the forest and contemplate the nature of reality" he said, "to achieve liberation from karmic bondage one must strive to only engage in morally upright acts." I think this is because it forces one examine their own qualities and intentions on a fundamental level to be successful.
