The marvellous peacock butterfly!
I photographed this stunning insect one lovely early summers day at Strumpshaw Nature reserve. One of my favourite butterflies to see here in the British Isles and also, very happily, one of the most common. This guy, the peacock (Aglais io), is probably one of the few that most people can easily identify because of the distinct eyes on the wings. They certainly make a big impression, setting your eyes on a newly emerged peacock for the first time is something you are not likely to forget if you are interested in nature.
When the wings are closed they are remarkably well camouflaged on tree bark and if alarmed they will flash their eyespot and make a hissing noise by rubbing their wings together, this should startle any predator that might be investigating them.
