The Assasin!

The assasin flies (Asilidae) are a family of badass aerial predators. Often seen waiting in ambush they have an uncanny ability to catch and kill other insects on the wing. Once caught the assassin will inject its victim with saliva and a neurotoxin immobilise it and start the digestion process. The assasin fly can then sucks the juices out with its sharp proboscis.

I came across this one hunting over an area of swam in the centre of Yogyakarta in Java, Indonesia. This small area must have had one the highest diversity of insects I have ever seen. Everywhere I looked where fascinating little creatures. I had to retreat in the end from the relentless attack of mosquitos.
