First groups finished in World Cup

The final round of group play is always exciting when everything is on the line. The excitement is double since it's the only time we have two World Cup games going on at the same time.

Groups A & B finished their last round of group play today. Uruguay and Russia met tied for the group. Uruguay won Group A with a 3-0 victory. Russia will advance to the knockout round as well.

Portugal and Spain entered the day tied for the lead in Group B. Spain faced Morocco while Portugal played Iran. It looked as though Portugal would defeat Iran and Morocco would defeat Spain, but late goals led to draws in both games. Spain is the winner of Group B by goals scored after drawing in points and goal differential. Portugal will also advance.

Groups C & D will complete their final rounds tomorrow. France plays Denmark with a win winning Group C for either side. The interesting story in Group D is that Argentina must beat Nigeria to have a chance to advance to the knockout round. Croatia looks to be the winner of Group D.

I look forward to the remaining final rounds of group play. There is still a lot to be decided.
