Coin of the Day #1

Today I have a special coin to show you. Let me start by saying, it's not actually silver, hence the change in title. It is really old though and it's one that I haven't seen around a lot, so I wanted to showcase it. This is an 186(7) United States Nickel. It's difficult to tell the exact date as the last number seems to be inordinately worn.

You can clearly see the number "5" on this side of the coin.

The shield on the other side is not as visible, but some of the details are still there. I'm not sure how this coin was tarnished.

I got some details on the nickel from https://www.usacoinbook.com. This is the "Type 2" version of the coin that doesn't have sunshine rays around the "5." Here's an example from usacoinbook of what this nickel would look like if it had the rays.

I have little knowledge of how to grade a coin, but here's a chart that shows what pricing might be for low-grade version of this coin. That seems pretty good!

It's fun to dig through bags of old coins sometimes. You never know what you're going to find.

Are you a coin expert? What might this coin be worth?

Pretty sweet Nickel! I don't have any that old. Here is a good place to read about coin grading. PCGS Coin Grading. Here is their price guide with picture examples of each grade. PCGS Price Guide.

Thanks! They have a lot of good information there. I'm not sure how the toning would come into play. I probably won't actually have it graded as that would likely be more than the coin is worth, but it's still fun to have.

oh that thing ain't worth a plug nickel! pretty interesting though, it looks like copper but that is the tarnish you mentioned?

it's kinda ugly since it doesn't have the sun rays on it so if you don't like it that's understandable and I'd be willing to take it off your hands so you don't sour your otherwise beautiful collection. it could have a contamination effect on the other coins ya see.

That's a good point, it could have a contamination effect, but I have it isolated, so it should be safe. Thanks for pointing that out though. I wouldn't have wanted to have the whole collection go down the drain. :)

hahaha! hey Blondie have you heard from the comedyopenmic people? you should hands down win that contest!

I think the contest runs through the end of the week. We'll see! Thanks for the vote of confidence. :)

hahaha! hey Blondie I just saw pap-peppers video man! I didn't realize that you guys knew each other even. That was dino-might! lol. great job.
hey you know you were quoting Biblical principles there about planting
and harvest.
It's one of the major principles that God operates in: Seed time and Harvest. It's why tithing and offerings are so powerful.
you know he gave your home state though.
I got another piece of information. lots of rednecks up there man. lol

Yeah, he and I go way back on Steemit. I started following him shortly after I started. I even tried voting for him as a witness before I realized that you had to run a server to be a witness. Ha ha. It didn't work.

I tend to see more planting than harvesting, but I do it anyways. I still think it's important to do. I know there have been some people who have planted into my life and I like helping others with the same.

Yep, he gave a state. Sometimes I go there. Sometimes I leave there. I don't stay in one spot all the time, so it's good to have a permanent address where stuff can accumulate. :) Ha ha, poor Janton, so close and yet so far away!

hahaha you dirty dog Blondie! always foiling me. hey I started following papa-pepper the day I joined and he has helped me tremendously. He bought me an Armadilloman product and every once in a while he goes over to my blog, which usually looks pretty pitiful and goes down the line upvoting 4 or 5 and getting them over a dollar! just because he can.

Oh man that silver, that Stagecoach silver! my mouth was drooling when I saw that iconic Western design..almost broke out in a sweat! lol.
I gotta go see if you have a post on your blog.

Heh, sorry to foil you again. Hey, look out your window! Just kidding.

That's very nice of Papa to get you Armadilloman stuff. He does the same for me with votes. Every once in a while I get lit up. It's a nice boost.

I really like that Stagecoach bar. I almost bought another one today when I saw it at the store, but I picked a different one instead as the price on the stagecoach had gone up. I was hoping to get more than I bought today, but the selection wasn't as great as I had hoped, so I decided to hold the rest of my money for later.

Just found your blog! I follow @papa-pepper and just read his latest post. I love coin collecting!! Older US History coins are my favorite. But I have some ancient roman coins too. I think my 3 cent piece that I have is my favorite. :)

Well, thanks for stopping by! Papa-pepper is an awesome guy. It has been a pleasure following him.

Do you ever post on your coin collection? I wouldn't mind seeing those roman coins... or the three cent piece. If you post them, I recommend using steemsilvergold as one of the tags. That's the primary tag for the silver and gold stackers on here.

You are welcome! Yes he is! I haven't ever posted about my coin collection. Maybe I should! :) And I will definitely tag it with that if I do. Maybe I will make a video about them.

That would be cool to see a video on your coins. Feel free to tag me in the post so I make sure to see it!

Awesome will do! It is a small collection. I started it when I was like 12 or something. Later on one of my co-workers dealt in ancient coins, that is where I got my roman ones. But I only bought 3 of them for like $35 bucks or something, back in 2004. I wish I would have bought so many more from him....oh well. haha

Hey, it still sounds like you've got a good start... and most people don't have ancient Roman coins in their collections, so you have a leg up there. Looking forward to seeing them when you have a chance.

You are very right! haha. And it gives me an idea for a video/post on here, always looking for those. haha

As you know, I'm no coin expert, but this is another pretty one ... and it's not silver :) Hope you get some answers here though!

They don't have to be silver to be pretty. They don't necessarily even need to be coins. I've got one for tomorrow that I must have picked up long ago that I'm looking forward to showing off.

Looking forward to seeing that one too then @themanwithnoname 😅

Tbh i would go for Good - VG... that coin has seen it's fair share of battles, can't be classified as Fine, but this is my opinion which is based on what a old man that bought my last coin said to me, if it has a bunch of tears, scratches, etc... it's not Fine... so 21-22$ bucks

Thanks, that makes sense. I'll probably just hang onto it and somewhere down the road I might try to get it graded and sell it. For now though, it can sit in its new protective shell and look pretty.

It is impossible to see the coin clearly, so to grade it ...Follow @vgholdingsllc advice and look at PCGS guide. Remember, though, that these prices are for PCGS slabbed coins.

Remember, though, that these prices are for PCGS slabbed coins.

Good to know. The slabbing cost adds to the price of most coins. You can have a coin that's just a standard, modern coin, but if it has been slabbed, it's worth more. Ha ha. I don't think I'm in a rush to get it graded or to sell it. I was just curious what I actually had.

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Here comes an other coin right out of history, Beautiful (y)

Yes, it is an older coin. Thanks

Keeping History is beautiful, It must be a very good feeling
