I grew up in a small town in Texas. Pretty much everyone was genuine because everybody knew everyone. Not much point in pretending to be something you are not. Also, if you were a jerk, the whole town knew it. I moved to Los Angeles after high school. Holy shit was that a culture shock. Everyone's full-time job was to be as cool as possible 24/7. During the time I spent there I don't think I got to really know one single person.

I have lived in big cities like New York and LA but spent most of my time in a small town where everyone knew everyone. The differences in how people act couldn't be starker. I like small towns because more people are themselves, but once you get used to being yourself it kind of follows you around.
