Backtrack (2015) Movie Review
Backtrack is a psychological thriller. Peter Bower (Adrien Brody) is a psychologist who blames himself for the accidental death of his young daughter in a traffic accident. As his grief consumes him, he spirals down as he realizes the patients he has been doing intakes on are all dead and they all died on the same day. Is he hallucinating or is it real? Is this more than just grief?
He goes to his childhood home to see if his visions are related to a tragedy from his youth. His father William (George Shevtosv) is retired chief of police for the town who thinks the past should be left in the past. The story unfolds to be more than an unfortunate childhood accident. Slowly the memories Peter has been repressing come forward. Is he innocent or is he guilty?
Adrien Brody is fabulous as this tortured soul. His character unravels as he seeks atonement and answers. But can he handle the truth when he really remembers? Are the spirits seeking justice or is he mad?
Solid performances by Sam Neil as Peter’s therapist and as Peter’s father. Really well-done film. It was good story-telling.
