Water content in food.

Feeding cats seem like an easy task. Leave out dry food and fresh water and occasionally feed them treats right? Wrong. Just like human's it is important to look after the macro's of your cat's diet, taking care with not feeding them too much sugar, salt, fat etc.

The single most common mistake is feeding cats only dry food. It is important to note that cat's derive most of their water intake through their food, anywhere between 70 and 80% in-fact, and this means they have very little reason to drink water. Because of this dietary preference, cat's can develop certain conditions such as urinary tract disease if they continue to eat low liquid foods such as dry food. As such, feeding your cat canned or wet food is the equivalent of giving them water!

Even with a high water content in canned food, it is often not enough to to just feed them wet food and expect that to be enough. Fresh water needs to be available throughout the day. Some cat's prefer running water and so do invest in a fountain. These are particularly good because they can also filter the water.

Some cats are hypersensitive to the chlorine in tap water and so will reject drinking tap water. In case you wondered why your cat seems to be extra picky about their water, bottled water will usually do the trick.
