Discovering the Selkirk Rex II
The continued success with the dominant gene saw a strong repetition in creating a line of Selkirk kittens. As time went on however, slight variation was observed within the curly haired cat and this came in the coat length. The coat length of these cats has been observed to be both long and short. The unique appearance of the coat has been said to be almost wool like. Through extended breeding, many other cats have been used to breed the Selkirk cat. This included Shorthairs, Persians, Himalayans and others. The breed would eventually find official recognition among the various cat association starting from the early 90s. Over the course of 10 years it would then find acceptance and validation on an international scale.
Due to the long and curly coat of this type of Rex, there are a number of considerations that potential cat owners should be aware of. For instance caring for this type of cat has its own special requirements and the longer length variations can lead to shedding around the house in considerable volumes. The Selkirk Rex is regarded as a healthy breed that does not suffer from hereditary health conditions in its genome. However, as with any type of cat, care to activity and nutrition should be given to ensure a long and healthy life.
I've not heard of the Selkirk breed. Thank you for the education.
