The Lowdown on the new Intel i9 CPU's

It's time to tap into that Swiss bank account. The Intel i9 processors are about to hit the market and it sets the standard in performance and a high price tag!

Starting at $US2000.00, you better have a lot of interest built up on that Swiss bank account too. The top line i9 brings 18 ( you read that right) cores to the table with a clock speed of up to 4.5 GHz with turbo boost 3.0! From here you can go to 16, 14, 12, and a measly (sarcasm intended) 10 cores. I'm skeptical on the top 18, 16, and 14 cores reaching those speeds due to power requirements, but time will tell. Not all specifications have been leaked yet.

These processors will use a LGA 2600 socket and will use DDR4 Quad channel 2600 MHz RAM as well as the X299 chipset - and according to what I've been able to find out - will include 1 MB Level 2 cache! Important to miners is the Intel Core i9 will support up to 44 PCIe lanes! However if you can afford this setup, you may retire from mining.

The processors will use up 140 watts of power and possibly higher with the 18, 16, and 14 core variants, so you best have a hefty power supply too.

The Intel Core i9- 7920K is set to go on sale in August, with the remainder to be released following Computex 2017. The top three chips: the 18, 16 and 14 core variants do not yet have an official release date, but rumors of an October release are circulating around the internet.

So you may want to delay putting your Bentley in winter storage. You'll need it to go computer shopping!

I'm not sure, if the new core will be much better than the last. My Sandybridge is running @ 4.7 GHz for years now. If you have single-threaded applications, as most are, there is no advantage.
The problem is, that intel could do far better, but there are no competitors, since amd was crushed. But let's see the oc-results later this year. Buying this at this price is a no-go. By the way, good posts :-)

Thanks for the pat on the back. I've looked at some early tests of the entry level i9 and they're quite impressive. The i9 is based on the Kaby Lake architecture.

Let's hope so. yes, I heard of an oc with hardcore-cooling. It will be interesting how far it can go with air.
