Since January, each month of this year has seen some of the biggest and most popular game titles released in recent history. Existing franchises have given us a continuation, others have given us reboots, remakes and soft reboots too, along with new and unique games from triple A and Indie developers that are huge hits with gamers everywhere.

So here is a look back over the past 6 months at 5 of the best games so far this year.

5 – Detroit Become Human.

PS4 Exclusive

  • Announced back in 2015, this title has been one of the more most anticipated games to appear on the PlayStation Platform.
With titles such as Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls under there belt, Quantic Dream, the development studio behind Detroit, was expected to deliver yet another narrative driven game with some amazing visuals, and they did not disappoint. This title has been pegged by many gamers and reviewers alike as being one of the best looking games on the PlayStation to date, and they are 100% correct. The visuals in this game go beyond what many people thought was possible on such a limiting platform, but thanks to awesome game engine that was designed by the studio, it was able to deliver some of the most optimised and lush looking visuals.
The game is based some time in the near future where androids are used in a variety of different roles like house keeping or detective. There are several playable characters for you to explore, with each story playing out along side or mixed with the other playable characters. The decisions you make in the game have real consequences that can change the direction of how the story will play out. Because of how this adventure game is designed, if your chosen character dies, there is no ''game over'' screen and the story will continue regardless.
It is a unique take on how an adventure game should play with some very impressive mechanics that enhance the overall experience. With it also being very story driven, it is a game that you could easily loose yourself in and get very addicted to. Not the most action packed game, but one that is engaging enough that it doesn't need to be over the top like some others.

4 – Jurassic World Evolution.

PS4, Xbox One and PC

  • With any movie tie in games, there is always that apprehension that the game will be bad. This is because countless games that have been made to coincide with a movie release have all been... well, shit. Thankfully though the development team behind this game actually took a different approach to the typical action 3rd person shooter genre we see in other movie tie in games, and they instead gave us a ''tycoon'' style game.
Just imagine zoo tycoon or the wild DLC from Roller-coaster Tycoon 3 but with much better visuals and Dino-fucking-saurs. Yeah, I got goose bumps on the back of my neck too.
You have complete control over everything in your park, from the pens the dinosaurs are put in, to the land, to even being able to genetically create a number of different dinosaurs, I think there are 20 species for you to create, with the added benefit that you can create your very own, unique hybrid, just like they do in both of the recent Jurassic world movies. But much more in depth.
The AI in the game is also great as the Dinosaurs can escape from time to time with the carnivores aiming for your guests, and if you let them, they will eat your guests..... I suspect that is the main reason why there are no children in the game.
The UI is very easy to navigate and very intuitive. The visuals, for a tycoon style game, are extremely good, the game can be very immersive and as a whole... well, it is a game made to be a tie in with a movie that isn't shit, but in fact, the total opposite. That is why its popular among RTS and tycoon gaming fans.

3 – FarCry 5.

Xbox One, PS4 and PC

  • Fans of the franchise have been waiting for another entry into this game series that started with Crytek, and there prayers were answered with FarCry 5.
Despite the fact that Ubisoft was the main developer behind this title, it is by far one of the better looking games in recent years. It is not without its flaws, as on consoles, there are reports of frame rate issues and PC players have complained about several bugs, but putting that aside it is a very gripping game that performs everywhere else, including narrative and gameplay.
Taking what they learned from Assassins Creed Origins, Ubisoft gave us an open and expansive world that is very fluidic in its design and is packed full of content, instead of a structured, linear and restrictive game like some of there other titles.
While the narrative of the game is a little cliché and not that interesting when compared to its predecessors, the rest of the game however is on point, especially when it comes to the very impressive visuals and mechanics that can be seen throughout the game, which more than makes up for the lack of imagination in the story. The entire game is just a fun sandbox that allows you to play the game how you see fit, whether that be stealth with a bow and arrow, or all guns blazing from a helicopter.
FarCry is best known for over the top and aggressive action gameplay. Combining that idea with the open world, do whatever you want sandbox was the best decision Ubisoft could have made.

2 – FrostPunk

PC

  • It isn't often that I say a game is close to perfection, but this game contains many of the features I admire most in games.
This title takes the ideas from city building games and combines them with a real time strategy element, along with a heart, and gut wrenching narrative, to create something truly unique.
The game is set in a late 1800's, early 1900's steam era in a post apocalyptic setting where the world has frozen over. You are tasked with building and maintaining the last city on earth to help anyone and everyone survive the bitter cold. It sounds cliché, and it is to an extent, but when you factor in the fact you have to make laws such as putting children to work, making people work 24 hours and worst of all, using the dead as fertilizer for your food, that all combines into the narrative as you play, makes for an very immersive experience that makes you emotionally connect to the survivors you are trying to help. The narrative is further impacted by events that happen during the game like, sick refugees arriving, where you can decide if you will accept them all or turn away only the sick. Racing against an impending storm that will lower the temperature to beyond -100*c... every choice, event and decision has an impact on the narrative that emotionally connects you to it. And that is something that I have never experienced in a game before.
The visuals in the game are also second to none. They are not the best I have seen, but it is a combination of a lot of small details that make it visually appealing, like snow being trampled flat where people have been walking across them, only to be filled minutes later by snow, the way the automatons move and operate, how the snow builds up on building when the coal runs out, the Forrest vanishing because you have been cutting it down for building materials.
It is a game that takes a lot of ideas from multiple genres, and combines them all to create a real time strategy/survival game that is very well made and very enjoyable to play.

1 – God of War.

PS4 Exclusive

  • The God of War franchise has seen many titles holding the God of War name on the cover, but eventually ended up feeling repetitive and dated the older it got. That is one of the reasons why Santa Monica Studios and Sony Interactive decided to give the franchise a soft reboot.
While the game is still a continuation of the franchise as a whole, it is in fact an all new chapter that has changed many things that fans have come to expect from the games.
The game is centred around Kratos, who is a former Greek God of War. He now has a son by the name of, Atreus, and gone are his iconic swords and have been replaced by an awesome Axe that has the ability to freeze enemies. Think Thor's new axe Stormbreaker on acid and you get an idea of its abilities. There is also changes in the view as well. Now you have an over the shoulder, 3rd person perspective while you play, as oppose to the fixed cinematic cameras of previous titles. The main reason behind this is the hardware is not as limiting, giving the developers more options in there creativity, and boy did they create something truly stunning.
The game is based several years after Kratos defeated the Olympian gods, and he now resides in Midgard along with his son. The game starts with the death of his second wife who's last wish was to have her ashes spread out over the highest peak in the 9 realms. After defeating an unknown antagonist with godlike powers, they begin there journey.... I don't want to give too much away as the story is by far one of the best I have seen in a single player game in a very long time.
As a whole, the game is one of the best, if not, the best game in recent memory. It is a bold re-imagining of the franchise that has taken it to a whole new level of awesomeness in both the visual department and narrative, that gives us something that is truly immersive and gripping, while having balanced the narrative and action in the game almost perfectly.
It is a game that fans of the franchise will love, and will make newcomers want to explore the previous games. If you haven't played it, then you are missing out on one of the best games since GTA V was released 5 years ago.
