Sepia Saturday Smallpox Hospital Roosevelt Island
Sepia Saturday Smallpox Hospital Roosevelt Island
Happy Saturday everyone and as it is Saturday time for a Sepia Saturday post for the challenge hosted by @old-guy-photos.
This is a challenge I enjoy joining I love how Sepia Images have a sort of timeless feel to them, that said I seldom did Sepia till this challenge started, but now I try and make it a regular thing for my Saturday morning post, and with how I do love colorful images and share a lot of them, it makes a nice change on my feed.
For this post I decided to share a few shots the old Small Pox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, which has been vacant and looking run down since I moved here maybe 15 years ago, I have taken shots of it in the distance from Manhattan, but recently I went for a walk around part of the island and so have some shots of it closer up for this post

The hosptial is located at the Souther tip of the Island adjacent to a new park that only opens at 10 AM and As I was there a little after 7Am I could not check that out on this walk,
The Hospital was opened in 1856 and this location wa spicked as a sort of good location for a quarantine area I do believe, it closed 100 years later and eventually fell into disrepair as these shots show

in 1972 it was listed on the National Register of historic places, and the ongoing project that is estimated to cost around $4,5 Million it will be open to the public
I slip in a bit of color for this shot of the sign

I am glad they are restoring the place it has some cool architectural details as I try and show with these shots

Old stone with nice lines in architecture here, how deserted the area must have been 100 years ago to warrant the site used for quarantine facility.
Must have looked very grand when originally built, so good restoration is being done to bring old buildings back for all to enjoy.
Superb photography as always, have a wonderful day!
Yes it has changed so much now I am sure when this was build that end of the island was pretty much empty, it sure looks grand for a hospital even back then
Old structures always have great character. It definitely looks more like an elaborate hotel to being used as a hospital.

That's a seriously cool-looking structure. I wonder why they went with crenelations. It's not like you need bowmen to keep the smallpox at bay... lol
Yeah I was quite intrigued with this design for a small pox Hospital almost has the touch of a castle to it

Impressive with all the ivy!
Isnt it just I love when I see ivy over buildings especially older ones like this
That's quite a project to restore! Did it catch fire at some point? Curious as to why there's no roof?
From what I could find online which wasn't much it was left empty for so many years I think parts of the roof collapsed but I didnt find any mention of a fire
These are absolutely brilliant photos; incredibly crisp, and wonderfully set for sepia. They really set a rather gothic look for the type of hospital it was.
Thanks Kindly I thought even when I was taking the photo that this place was ideal for some sepia edits ;)
I am really glad they are restoring this old building, which I had no idea existed. I look forward to see the results, so keep an eye on it for me please 😊 It will be quite interesting to see before and after photos. These are great shots; no doubt sepia is the perfect choice for this 👌
Me to it has such style now that I have seen it up close it would have been a shame if it had been let get run down completely and destroyed
Thanks I have noticed the scaffolding on the building from across the river for a long while now so progress seems to be going slow unless they are doing a lot of work indoors, I couldn't find when it is due to be finished but I would love to go and see it when it is finished and open to the public
