Dear Witnesses, can we remove excessive self up-votes on comments?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I usually don't get involved in steemit platform politics but when you see people up-voting 100% for themselves on comments, than I think this crosses a line.

Self Upvotes.png

If you haven't seen the great posts from @calamus056 yet that lists some major self up-voters than I like to recomment reading through it.

It is not that I blame any individual on that list, they are probably smart people who take advantage of the opportunities the platform is giving them. The Solution to the problem is therefore simple.

Take the opportunity away from them again!

I found the following on the steemit white paper which addresses the challenges of abuse very well and the risks that come with it.

The challenge faced by Steem is deriving an algorithm for scoring individual contributions that most community members consider to be a fair assessment of the subjective value of each contribution. In a perfect world, community members would cooperate to rate each other's contribution and derive a fair compensation. In the real world, algorithms must be designed in such a manner that they are resistant to intentional manipulation for profit. Any widespread abuse of the scoring system could cause community members to lose faith in the perceived fairness of the economic system.

I hope this abuse (excessive self up-votes on comments) has been noticed by steemit.inc and the witnesses and is something you agree should be addressed with changes to the code to remove the incentive in doing so.

Please follow @calamus056 and up-vote his reports since he provides very valuable information!

I absolutely agree with you! Even vote for your comment is nonsense, no matter how much power people use

but i think selfvoting is our ryte..out off steemit in whole world selfvoting is prmitted for every candidate...then according to this law selfvoting is permitted in steemit

You are right, you can upvote yourself as often as you like. My concern is just about excessive self upvotes using bots.

yes this is cheating steemit gives us some money and more knowledge from many and best talented people via posts..but if we dont read any post or not share with everyone and only try to get upvotes via bots is cheating and i think steemit security check this bots and block these different services which i m seeing from 1 month in steemit

Self voting is ok for posts/blogs but I totally agree with the self vote comments, that should be banned and it will help the steemit community! 🙌🏼

Yep the self voteing is pretty lame. I do on the other hand understand why people do it. It is some kind of investment for them. But if there is no self vote people might become more active instead of just posting and upvoting themself.

Self upvotes are fine, I just think they shouldn't be an incentive to benefit from constant 90 - 100% self upvotes.

Agreed. But as whales and dolphines can change how much they upvote there is nothing you can do at the time. It is either don't allow upvoting from yourself or allow it :)

If you are reading, writing and engaging with the content on SteemIt, I think you deserve a vote. Many users are not and shouldn't be trying to be content creators. I want to give them a reason to stay. I want them to make meaningful comments and further engagement. If they give themselves a few cents along the way, good for them! I feel that some of you that are harping on this really need to check your reasoning. If you are offended by those who are not contributing focus on that. THIS IS THE PRIMARY REASON TO HOLD SP.

upvoting my comment for "Attention"

Thanks for your comment. I like to answer on your points.

Edited: People deserve a vote. Yes I agree but does it need to be 100% on every own comment? Is there no other person to vote for?

Give themselfs a few cents. Fine with me but does it need to be excesive 100SBD and up?

I haven't seen any 100 SBD earning comments, please link one.

Please review the link I included in my post from calamus056.

I probably didn't state it clearly in my post, when I write 100% up votes, I don't mean 1 time 100% up vote on a comment, I mean constantly up-voting own comments with 100%.

It;s hard to stop it, people can easily make alt accounts.

in fact it was a discussion since the start & steem still work :)

Voting yourself for 100% of the time is killing the platform. I do find it OK if someone upvotes himself a bit but also upvotes others as well.

Yes, I agree. Other's as well is the key.

Not sure you should not be able completley to upvote yourself, but indeed if you disabled selfvoting there would be alot more voting on peoples post and comments and i think more spread. Some people would be angry if you disabled i guess. Tell me what is your solution? Can witnesses really disable this? Sorry I dont know the full powers of witnesses.

Thanks for you comment. The majority of the top 20 witnesses need to agree on changes before they can be executed. The changes are coded by steemit.inc but the witnesses need to accept them in order to be activated on the blockchain. To be clear, I am not saying anything gets changed, I simply propose a change to take the incentive for "excessive" self up votes away.

You can't fix it with removing vote on your own comment, man.
Because most of the people make different accounts to self-vote.
So the lists of top "abusers" are actually not the real one.

Thanks, yes that makes sense. Nevertheless if the voting power on comments is reduced, like it was before HF19, than that should help to prevent draining the pool in my opinion.

Yeah, I was thinking about it too. Maybe it can help, let's see! :d

Just after the HF19 it was a very big issue here but as the days are passing by people are changing their attitudes and do not promoting self upvotes here.
