The top lists and the bottom shifts
A few days ago, @whatsup posted an updated list of the top 30 authors by payout over the last 30 days and it is quite an interesting look at what the EIP has done over the last few weeks, and is ongoing even further considering some in the list now won't be there next month, like those who have been in a few circles or caught plagiarizing.
@whatsup took a list before the EIP and hardfork which looked like this:

29 oldstone $301.173
30 bitrocker2020 $298.947
What is interesting to note are the people who are in both lists, me included. As I mentioned to @smooth the other day, is that my account might be a good indicator of what is going on to some degree, as my posting behavior hasn't shifted (I post regularly as I have for years), but the difference between the payouts is that I stopped using @ocdb a few weeks before the hardfork.
On the first list I was in 26th position with an @ocdb enable $622 dollars, but on the latest list I am in 5th position with $476, about a 25% reduction. So I am higher on the list with much less payout and no bidbots at all. I wonder where 476 would have appeared pre-hardfork considering the top 30 cut off was 20% above that? I would say much, much lower.
Nowadays, the top payout goes to @gooddream with $829, which would have put him in 15th position pre-hardfork. This got me thinking about what the difference really is between these charts so, I did calculations.
Pre-Hardfork total for top 30
29,361.998
Post-Hardfork total for top 30
12,145,161
Wow! what a difference.
But, if you want to see something more interesting you have to start asking the question: where did the $17,000 go?
Oh no, not there, here:
This is the account of an Australian photographer, @paulmp, who in a few minutes is going to over double his account payout with one post on his exploration of Antarctica with his camera Since that post got seen and pushed into Trending by @ocdb, he has been getting consistent support for his photographic work, the way it should be.
While very few are going to get consistent support on their posts over time, the lottery effect has returned back to Steem to some degree and unknown accounts are not only getting additional support, some of them are actually getting seen by others and I noticed that @paulmp posted about an hour ago, and is getting some accounts voting on him that would not have known he existed a week ago.
But, the lists above are only the top 30 accounts before and after and I would predict some relatively strong reshuffles of economic outcome through a great many more down the list as while there was a lot of high end abuse, a lot of the circle abuse can now be seen, and the light has been shone upon the lower (but still very high) levels too and at least flamingirl, angelinafx, coldsiksu, sigizzang are unlikely to appear next month and perhaps a few others. (with Sigizzang spreading his stake to many more authors than previously).
The accounts that have taken the majority of downvotes have been the most abusive on the platform or, have been retaliated against because of the downvotes they have cast on abusers. While far from pretty, what has clearly happened at least at the top end is that the abusive accounts that do not actually have community support have had their payouts heavily curbed, while those who do have community backing have moved upward.
What this also means and we can see demonstrated through the trending page on Steemit.com now is that it is easier to be seen and there is more chance of variety in the top ranges due to the reduction of hyper-inflated post payouts. This means that the odd poster who benefits from the random large support actually has a chance of gaining traction in the eyes of the community.
The other thing to think about with those lists above is the change in curation as not only does it require less payout to be in those lists (all lists really), the curators are getting twice the return that they were getting pre-fork. This means that the EIP (pushed by @trafalgar and @kevinwong for long time) with 50/50, combined with the convergent curve and the downvote mechanism has broken the reign of bidbots and encouraged much more direct participation in the voting process, including the bidbot stake roaming the Steem seas.
It is a learning process though and while there is still a lot of room for improvement, I think that those who actually get off their own posts and out of their comfort zones once in a while and look at the average changes and who is getting supported, might be pleasantly surprised by the development thus far. Still a long way to go for sure, but with the increasing dynamism of voting and the coming tools of communities, SMTs and Resource Credit delegation, we are shaping up for a chance to make an impact in the crypto scene at the right time.
For those that don't like that there is anyone let alone those who might consistently be in the top 30, 50, 100... In time as Steem continues to evolve, the list will change but there will always be some who outperform others for attention and support in the same way that not every tennis player in the world can win a Grand Slam tournament, but Roger Federer has 20 to his name.
What I think is that eventually these lists are going to be filled with the best of the best, but they won't be on Steem, they will be on the SMTs and the applications that best suit their type of content and their personalities. In this vein, It would be interesting to see the top 10 lists for the tribes to see what kinds of overlaps there are.
Anyway, back to IRL work now.

[ a Steem original ]

@creativecrypto is an account I've really been struggling with for a long time. They were the old @sndbox team who were incredibly encouraging of the artistic community on Steem... but then they lost their delegation from Steemit, and basically changed to using their remaining support to upvote retweeted tweets 10 times a day. The articles they produced were great... but the abuse was epic. Then when EIP came in, they just stopped posting altogether...
I see this as a win for #newsteem although I still mourn the loss of @sndbox
Yeah, I never knew much about sndbox, but there has been a lot of abuse that has been "uncovered" (addressed) and more will be targeted going forward hopefully.
He does good work; drops a heap of quality photos in each post, includes context, then replies when people respond. The new recipe for success on #newsteem.
I've gotta agree matt. while most photographers are stingy AF, posting one or two photos, numerous times a day, paulmp almost gives too many photos for the eyes to take in. He has basically challenged the begrudging status quo amongst steemit photographers, and i think its about friggin time.
I've done all that mostly unintentionally, I've not really looked at what other photographers are doing, rather just posting the type of content I enjoy reading from other people. More stories than settings, but happy to share settings too.

give me the stories any day! if they cant figure out settings, they can message you.
Thank you for the vote of confidence, I appreciate it. I'm trying to find a sweet spot between photo overload and the "stingy" Instagram style posts. I tend to go more towards overload ;-)

Edit: I responded to the wrong comment.
The photos are great :)
I like your confidence for being in the list next time ;)
(just kidding)
I pretty much agree with you, there is still a lot of room for improvement
Haha, yeah I am never confident about that, but I am not going to change what I post about and I would have posted this if I was not in the list too as I think it is valuable. When it comes to examples, I generally use myself when I can, even if negative.
I think the improvement is happening, but it takes time for such a diverse community.
Lots o
What about the bidbots-turned manual/semi-manual curators? Do we have a data about it? It is fun to know about that information :D @tarazkp
What kind of data? Most of them are going manual, if not already. A few of them are downvoting with their stake (returning value to the pool) and upvoting much more widely. I can't pull numbers for things (@abh12345), but in general, the stake is going much further.
The other thing to remember is that previously the buys on bidbots were paid to delegators in liquid, curation is paid in Steem Power. This is an important factor in my opinion.
Thank you for posting from the https://steemleo.com interface 🦁
:) I try to mix them around as I use a few, but attempt to do the Leo ones from Leo as often as possible.
Interesting. I have turned a big fan of that trending photographer. Good haejin is now nowhere to be found.
He is a great photographer and I am jealous of all the locations he has visited :)
Haejin is around.
The good thing about @gooddream is that he actually puts out original posts that are well written and well thought out. It is nice to see him at the top of the list. He definitely deserves it for the number of quality posts he puts out per day.
i agree its great that he puts out great content, but he also bots to get his payout, as do most of the top paying authors. i would like to see what an organic list of top authors would look like, with the payouts adjusted to reflect the bot payouts subtracted from the actual payout total. this would show us who is actually being voted on by steemians for their content, and their real worth in steemit.
As far as I know that is incorrect. He does have some big accounts that support him but they are not bots. It is part of a long standing business agreement he made as far as I know. He is pretty upfront about it and fair about it. He could easily win every Tasteem review he does, but he chooses to not post through the portal because he knows it would be skewed due to the upvotes he gets. That speaks a lot about his character right there. In my book, he is beyond reproach.
i wasnt attacking the guy personally so get off your cheer-leading wagon. I was commenting on how the majority of that list are up there because of bots and whales, whether paid for straight out, or sweet-hearted (friends of bot owner/whales), and that the top author list is skewed because of this association.
it's like saying "I won the election because people voted for me", and ignoring the facts that all the millionaires and superpacs donated to my campaign.
You made a statement, I corrected it. Trust me, no one wants to see me in a cheerleader skirt.
i see, so xeldal, enki, rocky1, appreciator and tipu appear on post payouts out of the kindness of their hearts? interesting. he might not pay for their votes straight out, but somewhere there is an association.
ya, they might not be "bots", but it computes the same. he gets huge whale votes on every post. all i'm saying is, who would he be without those votes?
certainly poorer, as he is no longer earning as much nor extracting 5k steem a month since new steem.
I'm not trying to dis the guy, he seems a really good writer. i like his topics and I might even vote for him if he wasn't already paid an obscene amount. however there are a LOT of really good writers here. I think they deserve as much credit for good work as the same thirty guys on that list.
I don't disagree about there being other writers that deserve those kinds of votes, heck, I've been here two years busting my butt hoping a whale would take a shine to me and do exactly the same thing. I don't hold it against them(him) though. Now if they were posting crap I might take offense. I actually asked him about his big upvotes in a comment on one of his posts recently and he seemed to have a reasonable response. Maybe I am just gullible.
Read his reply from a few days back after taking some DVs.
sorry, this info is oblique. care to give me a post title?
Jury is still out on the bots as he claims no according to a comment a couple days ago
Yeah, I'd rather see some quality up there than not.
While there are still names on there I have never heard of I am encouraged to see names that are out there working for and on Steem every day and some of the best contributors to Steem and Engagement over the long term.
In my opinion directing the money rewards to dedicated Steemians who have been doing this all along, high prices and low prices... That's a win.
Definitely and in time, they will stabilize the platform and help replace themselves with creators that have much larger followings.
yeah Steem career ladder for non-developers.
Post, Invest, Curate, . . . It's something we should think about at some point.
Not every stakeholder wants to or should have to manually curate.
I think there is going to be more curation as a service introduced when price increases. If steem was 10 dollars today, How many of the whales would be comfortable putting 2000 dollars on a post?
Thank you for the mention @tarazkp, still finding my feet and experimenting with different forms of content, but mostly focusing on creating the type of content I would want to read.

Keep up the good work and keep creating what works for you and you enjoy. Nice to see some content from oz getting traction. I don't know many from the west, but if in Adelaide look up @mattclarke and my bro @galenkp for a beer.
I was actually born in Adelaide, grew up mostly on the East Coast, the West is a relatively new thing :) I'll look them up next time I drive across to Adelaide.
