Monochrome Monday - Candid Prep PortraitsteemCreated with Sketch.

The other week I shot some photos at a friends wedding. When I arrived, the bride and groom were preparing the reception hall by themselves which I think was quite nice. The couple put a lot of personal sweat into their wedding and were still calm, relaxed and casual on the day. It was one of the most laid back weddings I have ever been to.

This is the first shot I took on the day and is of the lovely bride lighting the candles throughout the room. When it comes to portrait photography, I much prefer the candid moments caught on film as they capture more of the feeling and emotion. These are generally lower quality, natural lighting and split second snaps without having the chance to set the camera up for the shot.

This is one of my favourites as it was just the two of us in the room and we were joking around about a memory from the past and her smile came naturally and unforced. Since she was concentrating on lighting the candle, she didn't realise I was actually taking the photo.

For me, it is these kinds of photos that are the real memories from a wedding, not the set portraits. These are the ones that will be looked back at in years to come and raise a feeling that takes a person back to the moment and reminds that even though it was a big day, it was the little things that mattered. It is always the little things.

looks so genuine.. shows real emotions, one's happiness :)

I totally agree. Even though staged / set photo's can be really beautiful, the spontaneous photo's that happen in the moment usually makes you see them and the momemt itself as they really are.

The natural light from the window in this shot absolutely makes it - impressive.
