Comment-petition: reduce risk, build your blog

in #steemit6 years ago

This came up just before and has come up several other times earlier so I think it is worth a short post. Build your blog.

There are people who make a good amount of return from commenting, I know as i am one of the people who consistently reward comments. There is a high incentive for some people (especially from countries with low costs of living) to get complacent and only earn from comments. This is very risky.

Yes, it takes time to post and build up a blog and most likely, the return isn't going to be as good as a lot of half decent comments on blogs that reward them but, things will likely change as competition arrives. There will never be an easier time in the future than now to build a blog and subsequent following as onboarding happens, price increases and even more competition arrives. The new ones in will also want a slice of the comment pie as they will quickly recognise that building a blog is very hard, takes time and comes with no guarantees.

What this means is that the blogs like my own who do reward comments are going to be inundated with comments looking for rewards. At the moment, I am trying to get to as many as I can and reward as many as I can but, there is a limit to how far I am willing to spread the value and, on what I am willing to spread it to. What this means is that likely in the future, comments themselves will be more highly rewarded but, fewer comments by percentage will get rewarded and this will be based on quality of comment.

I already see this happening in myself as people jump on my posts hoping for/expecting reward without necessarily offering very much to the conversation. However, it is a natural evolution of content that in time, quality will take precedence and the average will be just that, average. With my own posts alone, I read and comment upon about 100 comments a day.

Every day ~2 full votes go toward comments. This might not be a lot per comment but, if my vote was worth 100 dollars, and I did the same, that would be 1-2 dollars each. But, that is obviously going to attract more commentors but there is no way I can read, comment on or reward 1000 comments per day. This means that I will have to be much more discerning with my time but, I might be rewarding 50 comments 4 dollars each. Will your comments consistently be in the top 5%? Combine this with the price of Steem and again, risk.

If you think about it from a sporting perspective, the players who play in the premier leagues may not be that much better than those who play in a division down but, their salaries are massively different. This means that the competition in the lower divisions can be much more aggressive than that at the top as there are more players vying for a low number of positions. This is why people are self-voting ( I generally dislike this) their comments for visibility, especially on large whale accounts. They are using their stake to put themselves in the eye of a whale and close out the minnows. Comment competition and their stake gives them an edge over those without. I would like to see more whales flagging this behaviour when it doesn't add value or is obvious ball-rubbing/attention-seeking behaviour but, that is me.

My point with this is that in time, the comment sections are going to become increasingly crowded and even if spam can be filtered, there are going to be better comments flowing in. Some people are trying to grab attention with pictures, signatures and flashing gifs which for me, is a turn off and i have to restrain myself from flagging. In my opinion, it is not attractive, it is off-putting and distracting and often reeks of desperation. Harsh? Not really.

This is why it is a good idea to at least put in a solid effort to build a blog, gain some followers with decent content and perhaps as the flood gates of users opens, some run off will also support your blog too. That is my hope for my own position anyway as i know that in time, there are going to be some very, very good authors and accounts coming in.

This all takes a lot of work and I find that I am commenting less on other people's blogs even though I read an upvote them as I have to increasingly spend time on my own. This is natural but, it is also what I have been working toward anyway, to become a node.

I am currently in a position where I don't have to chase followers and those I would have to chase to grow (whales) I am unwilling to hijack their comment sections, memo their wallets or DM them links to get their attention. My growth now depends on quality of content, community interaction and word of mouth. For me to attract any large voters, I essentially need the larger voters who vote upon me now to read what I write, appreciate what I offer them and the community and, recommend me on to their peers. It is difficult as word of mouth is not something that is easy to spread at Steemit due to the UI. It is also hard as there are less large voters in the pool with sensitive eyes. Competition.

Competition isn't always healthy but it is always going to be present at all levels, whether a whale or a redfish. Someone asked how they can reduce their future risks here and on Steemit it is the same as everywhere else in the world, diversification and this requires investment into many areas by definition. Some will return rewards now, some later, some will collapse. If you are relying on comments for your income, you are taking a narrow, high risk pathway.

Hopefully, this offers a few things to think about at least. I will be back in a few hours... I have to clean the house.

A balanced approach between commenting and posting is going to work best i think. If you comment and engage then people are more likely to notice you and check out your blog. But if you dont post often or poor quality then people wont follow or be interested in you.

I dont follow to many people on here and dont feel the need to comment on every single post just ones that resonate with me or i have an opinion on.

I think that if you upvote less comments then you will encourage more thoughtful and engaging comments rather than people just writing anything in a hope of an upvote

I dont follow to many people on here and dont feel the need to comment on every single post just ones that resonate with me or i have an opinion on.

I think this is a healthy approach that more people should follow as like you said, they will likely comment better and actually get larger votes.

When I started on here i felt like i should be commenting on everything i read. I now know thats not the best approach - not eveything i read i agree with or have an opinion on. Save your time and enegry for content you genuinly have an opinion on.

I go through my following list often and unfollow those who are no longer relevant for me or inactive etc. Its a good way to keep your feed interesting and not overloaded wit irrelevant posts

Thanks for the idea. I go thru my feed more often than posting or reaching out to new posts. It's time to clean the list and remove the non interesting ones.

Yea. I used to feel bad about unfollowing people, but now i figure if im not interested or engaged then im not doing them or me a favor.

Its the same when i notice someone has unfollowed me i dont get upset i just figure they arent interested in what i post and thats there decision

Comment spam is out of control. People with one dollar upvotes just upvote all their own comments, 10 bucks a day, 300 a month. That's a job in many places. It's one thing to make many comments hoping for upvotes, that's an honest payment. I saw one guy make two accounts that just upvote each other comments today. No blogs, just two upvotes for each comment.

You might be interested in the video of @ned speaking in Korea @liberosist posted last night. @ned said that SMTs will be able to be egalitarian, rather than stake-weighted only, and equal vote weight completely changes the equation that incentivizes those scams.

I sure hope Stinc gets this right!

Scam comes in at all levels large and small.. People don't seem to understand that there is a give and take element to this platform, many just take and expect more.

Sadly the self upvotes by huge whales get attention but there are a ton of people just upvoting their own comments and that's all they do.

Whats worse is when people come by claiming they have read your post, and then proceed to leave a 1 line comment which they upvote but don't even hace the corteousy to upvote your post. Thats just wrong in my opinion

Yeah when they comments 5 seconds after you post a long blog you know they didnt read it.

Yep very true!

Sorry for the late comment, but ironically I had no vote to give so had to postpone my comment. As one who does not trust my passwords with third party sites, it limits me due to not having a slider (hopeful to rent enough delegation in the coming week to get it). But even with the slider figuring out how to balance this has me perplexed.

I saw the math (I am a math guy) early on in my time here. I even wrote a post on it asking how one balances this (believe it was my third post about 3 months ago). As my connections have grown in three months, the problem has grown as well. I have 10 votes a day. So what I was doing for a few weeks was letting myself run down to 45-55% voting power, not the solution. I logged on this morning with my power back just a hair over 90%, I have already used 3 votes and have 2 left. So do I conserve them for my own post later or do I dare peek at my feed? If I peek at my feed I know they will get used, with many other threads still being ignored (I pick my follow list very carefully so the feed is filled with quality content).

One last thought. After meeting with crickets here other than experimenting with the bidbots (which lost me money and still didn't get like minded eyes on my posts) I found as a newer person that commenting was the answer. Not only because of the upvotes one can get, but if one finds like minded posts, chances are the comment section will have several posts from other like minded individuals that one can begin a dialogue with. This was the only way I was able to navigate around here and let others know I existed. The New feed you are bumped off of within 30 seconds and the Hot and Trending feeds are bought for the most part.

So take it a little bit as a complement that some of us find your posts compelling enough that we want to interact not only with you, but some of the others that interact with you. It was from your comments sections I found others like Ash. One last thing I want to point out to you. There are times that I read (and imagine others do this too) your posts and do not comment because I have no vote to give you at that time. But my lack of comment does not mean you were not read and appreciated, and sometimes like with this post it will grab my attention enough I come back and comment and vote once I have enough. Sorry for writing a book, lol.

I can't complain about books being written here ;)

I have a post a few months back with a utopian suggestion to reduce the SP needed for the slider. When I started it took me about 2 months to get because steem was at 15 cents. Even though my payouts were low. Now, it is much harder to get to the 500 as steem is issued on market price as you know. I think i suggested 250 SP at the time but I think 150 might be okay as price climbs. I think the slider shouldn't come immediately though otherwise there ais going to be a lot of wastage considering the dust point.

As valuable and important as the votes are for me, comments are more important from the smaller voters. I would rather no vote but good engagement and you can use your vote to build your own account and support others who need it more than myself. I have worked very hard to get to a point where I am earning okay. It is different of course if you have a large account though. Of course, all votes are graciously accepted.

You are right as the things will go forward its going to be messy and difficult even now many newbies are struggling but still its a golden time.
You are giving away votes to lot of peoples everyday and thats really appreciable because there are peoples who just votes their own comments because they have good steem power in their wallet, but thats not it even though the planktons and minnows are upvoting their own comments to earn more.
The more the competition the more better things go for the hardworkers.

Competition isn't always healthy but it is always going to be present at all levels, whether a whale or a redfish

But this is true at same time.

Yes many peoples are earning a lot from comments.
When I came across you posts a month a ago, I was shocked because I always struggled to choose the topic for my post, But looking at your posts 2 or 3 every day or more with outstanding and posts on very valid points made me wonder "How can you do it if you can do it so can I"
That was what attracted me to your posts the most
I had a friend who went to a steemit guide school. When I asked him what they taught you there
"How to do quality comments and earn from scratch"!
I know many who were very poor but commenting good quality comments made a lot of difference but its gonna change sooner or later.
But there are still blacksheeps who have big powers and upvote their comments and have a big share of rewardpool for them.
@tarazkp thanks again for the post. seriously you bring the ideas out of blue.

seriously you bring the ideas out of blue.

Out of the blue and from life experience :)

yes. one thing may I ask you if you explain whole life experience in one sentence or word what would that be?

Clean the house to the beat of your daughters new drum set... Or not. If she can kick a ball, she can learn to dust and sweep. Parenting is filled with opportunity. If you heavily vote this comment... it is a waste my friend.

lol, she already has a feather duster and suggests we clean more. She spend time with the grandmother and I worry she is going to become an obsessive compulsive cleaner already. As fortune will have it, her cousin has a drum set and they live a few hundred metres away ;)

You always do a great job. I read you daily. It's nice that you upvote comments when you can but that's never been my expectation. I read because I want to and enjoy the content. I even mentioned you in one of my latest posts. I was going to nominate you for great content but you aren't a minnow so I had to give an honorable mention instead. :) It's not about the money for me. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to earn but I'm here to learn and be with people that understand what's coming next in this world of tech.

I agree i love the content it is very thought provoking and has made me think and become abit more critical and engaging on my own blog

I missed the post sorry. It has been a very tight schedule around here lately and I have been forced to be a bit of a 'post and runner' more often than I would like. It also means that I miss some thing in Ginabot too. Thank you for the mention :)

There are a lot of great sides to the platform and enhancing them will go a long way to reducing the other elements.

I totally understand that. It's not like these posts take 5 minutes. I can't do both at the same time so I try to take 30 minutes a day to go through just looking and commenting and posting if I find something interesting. Here's the post-- It seems like a good contest that really works to get minnows work seen. This took at least 90 minutes to write and format. But the end, I had no time for spell check. lol. Hopefully I got them all.

I never thought of the profitability angle of doing more commenting, rather than blogging...
(It won't change my habits, but interesting to note).

some people only comment. I think it is wise to maintain several streams.

I am one who comes chasing a reward. I am not shy to tell you. I do feel the comments I leave on the topics I comment on do offer something to your topic. The self-voting comment, I did much of that when I started. Sometimes I still do now, if I get a vote from someone on my comment and the vote does not reach the payout level. I might vote on it to push it up to payout level. I do not vote for myself to gain view advantage tho. I had not seen it that way prior to your mentioning it. And I had commented to some who had that self-voting their-self was bad form and they should share their vote around. At least I gained an understanding as to why they do. My own bogs I am working on, learning pieces of formatting them. The topics to write about I am a bit slow with, and I do be amazed how some like yourself, can type so a long post and still have time to read what people say. and you must read the comment too as you reply to them. I think you might need to still keep a low reward and only reward 50 comments. Just so you can pay the staff you are going to need to read through the comments. I have only started to follow you recently as a suggestion from a friend thinking I would enjoy your posts. I do like the way you think.

if I get a vote from someone on my comment and the vote does not reach the payout level. I might vote on it to push it up to payout level.

I think that is fair enough but at least do it after :)

The topics to write about I am a bit slow with, and I do be amazed how some like yourself, can type so a long post and still have time to read what people say. and you must read the comment too as you reply to them.

The more you write, the more you can write you will find and yes, it takes a lot of time for me but I try to get to as many as I can.

I have only started to follow you recently as a suggestion from a friend thinking I would enjoy your posts. I do like the way you think.

Welcome, it is appreciated :)

The new ones in will also want a slice of the comment pie as they will quickly recognise that building a blog is very hard, takes time and comes with no guarantees

I envisioned this coming, and its funny, a lot of comment(ers) are new users like myself, but its like playing a under age 18 soccer and expecting to remain under 18 after 4years. Things are moving at a very fast speed, new today is old tomorrow, starting with commenting is good to be honest, but to think commenting is the solid ground is delusional

Happy house cleaning

The house cleaning was mostly a bust, so tomorrow it will continue.

Yes, things move very fast and people look at old as 6 months.
