A little trashy

in #steem5 years ago

Is it just me or am I the only one that doesn't care too much about the UI issues on Steem? Sure, they aren't ideal but they aren't the end of the world either.

Today I sat in a presentation with the head of strategy for the company I work for, someonr who has been instrumental in actually moving the direction. It was funny to hear him talk about things that would very, very neatly apply to Steem - but know that it would be impossible to implement.

Some things are only possible with centralised governance, at least at this point. While the benefits of decentralisation are large, most people are not equipped to actually live the decentralised life and unwilling to really cooperate, even if there is a common goal. While a centralised organisation can justify costs and losses, individuals are much less willing to wear those costs, however slight they may be. Perceived loss is always going to come up against resistance, even if the loss is not actually a loss at all.

It is going to be interesting to see if the worker proposal system @blocktrades has put forward gets funded from the pool, how people will react to a reduction in rewards. Will they see it as a loss of revenue or, an investment into the future of the Steem Blockchain? Maybe it depends on whether someone is here to earn to sell or, earn to stake themselves.

What I like about the term 'stake' is that while some people think about it as placing a bet, it is actually staking out a plot of land, digital Steem real estate. Most people dream of buying land and building their dream house, this is how I think of Steem, a property that I am able to own and operate in the way I choose.

Of course, there is no way one can actually truly be independent on Steem as there are many, many points that are only possible because of the community as a whole and, the roles of members within. There are always overlaps, even if you canuse your property as you choose.

Steem is getting more interesting though of late as some people are starting to work out that in order for Steem to be successful, it is going to take a coordinated effort, time and likely a bit of cost. Luckily, not many people have to pay a direct cost and those who earn from the pool are still able.

While decentralisation is superior in many ways, it is always going to face the challenge that it requires cooperation at the fundamental levels, and we have come from a world that has been pushing individualism heavily for the last 50 odd years. Old habits die hard as they say and, this is just the beginning of those habits showing their age and weaknesses. While everyone wants the benefits of change, very few want to actually change, let alone pay the costs of change.

Hey to pay for a gym membership they barely use, go to the hairdresser every 6 weeks or a subscription to Netflix but, paying for actual improvement? That is the responsibility of others.

Many talk trash - and then wonder why they live in filth.

I have no issue if it is decided to take a small percentage of the pool for development. Most of us get a fraction anyway and it would be the same for everyone. I think the benefits would outweigh themselves and it should be a no brainer. This would also tie up some Steem and at least it is being put to good use.

There is an idea that what isn't used would be burned which would mean that the inflation rate would be lowered slightly. If they develop well, it is great for anyone holding.

I like that idea and it would have huge benefits to everyone holding. Give them 20 percent of the reward pool then and make Steem scarce. Really go to town and jazz this place up and attract the top developers.

....this is the cost of brainwashing the masses from governments over the last 50 years. ..That it's is here to help - through free money...(stolen from someone else)

....except you can't.( Unlike real property).
If someone doesn't like what you advertise on your land, they can't do anything about it.
Here they can more than do something about it.
A very good distinction there , highlighting the difference.

and we have come from a world that has been pushing individualism heavily for the last 50 odd years.

We have come from a world pushing collectivism through government and state, heavily - for the last 50 years, merely using the trojan horse of individualism...
( a little like the trojan horse of pushing 'equality' and more women working, while really wanting more tax slaves and debt serfs.)
...'what is says on the box, isn't necessarily whats inside'

...and many talk hot air, and wonder why they have their heads in the clouds! lolol.

...oh yeah, the UI doesn't bother me much, either...we must be getting old or somenthing ! lol

If someone doesn't like what you advertise on your land, they can't do anything about it.

This is not true at all, unless you live in the middle of the woods and no one can see what you advertise.

How is that not true?

Do you own land? Try advertising on it with a public facing condoning drug use, Nazism or sexually explicit material. It is your land, you can do whatever you want, right?

Ah, so you think there should be a central authority to decide on others action, in the crypto sphere?
A government?

Socialism has no place in real life.

Governments deciding what you say or don;t say on your own land is a symptom of the socialist cancer.
Only the authoritarian mindset could support this perspective.

Using authority as a defense of your argument, (governments in this case), is not an argument based in the principles of property rights, but one of approval of power over others...

it's very.... dominant hierarchy, oriented, shall we say.

I grew up on farm , re the do 'you own land thing', but not sure why that's relevant.
You have an apartment, so you find comfort in the fact that an authority can decide for you, tell you what to do in your own property?
i.e. - what poster you are allowed to place in your window?

Echo's of stockholm syndrome, communism matey...

You have gone off on a tangent of your own and again tried to say I said something I did not. It is tiresome and not worth my effort.

Trashy? Steemit has one of the cleanest UIs I've come across on the net in a long time that isn't a "modern" trainwreck. uBlock Origin doesn't have to block anything (which is a welcome break from seeing it climb into the thousands while sitting on YouTube), plus there's a dark theme that actually works.

The only things I've come across after months of reading articles on steemit is that the dark theme doesn't quite hit the bottom of the page in Firefox, and I'd personally like if the articles could spread out across the display a bit more. I understand sites need to be optimized for mobile nowadays, but with how narrow the site is, it's a bit too optimized (at 1600X900, content only uses 1/3 of the real estate on my laptop).

I don't mind the Steemi.com UI because I am used to it. The 'trashy' I mentioned had nothing to do with the UI itself, just the talk that goes around the place.

It's fine for those of us who have been around. I don't think it leaves a very good impression though.

We 're old!

Nods... Pride in what you do matters to me...

I like slippers..

Hmm, thought that said strippers.

both work...

Luckily there aren't so many newbies yet

It has not really bothered me as of yet. Perhaps in time though

People complain about little things, even if they know they are only temporary. Like a couple hours back, all the comments were in reverse chronological order. Not the end of the world and obviously something that would be corrected (looks like it is already)

Everyone expects something for nothing. I think there are better ways to pay for a worker proposal system than the reward pool, but that's just me.

Whatever way that it's decided to be funded will ultimately make someone upset for some reason so whatever way it's funded I'm sure will be just fine. The only concern I have is that people will be paid before any work is done and do nothing. I've heard several people say that this has happened on Dash several times resulting in funds being paid for no work done.

For me, I would like to see a section of the pool earmarked for development and all other draws share the rest. For example, 5% for development, 95% shared at the same rates as now.

When it comes to the issues with completion, I think it would also be interesting to introduce accountability of some kind.

Being here for a little over a year, I see no way to remaining sustainable than funding the change and development through the planned inflation. While short term unattractive, it could help provide a good foundation for the future development as well which could secure sustainable and value creation.
