This weekend we decided to stretch our legs outdoors in one of Durban favourite landmarks, the Durban Botanical Gardens. My son loves to run up and down the winding paths and chase the frantic little ducks, feeding them afterwards in consolation. My hubby and simply enjoy the slow walk and together we admire the beautiful flowers and foliage.

During this visit we ventured to a spot we had never been to before and we stumbled upon this little gem of a find! How amazing is this piece of art which has been carved out of a tree stump? 

This sculpture was created in representation of the annual winter sardine run that takes place along our coastline here in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. The migration of the fish is a huge event and the shoals are usually massive, although they are sadly decreasing in numbers as the years pass. These sardines are acknowledged as a much-welcomed food source for people, larger sea creatures and birds and they cause quite a stir along the shorelines when they come to visit.

The artist behind this astounding feature is a Ms Jenny Cullinan. Jenny is passionate about the annual sardine run and is very concerned about the diminishing numbers. The shoals are rapidly decreasing and their inconsistency in making an appearance is becoming more common year by year. Ms Cullinan reasons that climate change is the cause. The intent of her sculpture is therefore to try and create awareness of the diminishing numbers of these sardines and to promote more environmentally friendly lifestyles.
